    North Hancock 1/2/09

Trails: Hancock Notch to Cedar Brook to Hancock Loop trail Conditions: Well packed snow shoe trail. Traction needed on steep slopes. Water crossings were passable with caution. Equipment needed: Snow shoes for ascent, and we used crampons coming down the steep parts. Comments: Nine...

    Moosilauke -- Almost!!! December 6, 2008

Trish and Alex, I'm so impressed with all the hiking you both do, and the fun you have together. It is just tremendous. Alex is really developing both an appreciation and respect for Mother Nature. Maybe if we all start to leave jelly bean trails (or cookie crumbs) there would be more...

Mt. Roberts and Faraway Mtn. November 29

I loved the pictures of all the animal tracks. I am a novice at winter tracks and your pictures were 'worth one thousand words'. Thanks for the post. Is winter really here for good??

    Southern Ossipees (NH) Traverse, 11/16/08

I loved your TR perspective, Tony! This was my second 'online' hike (the first was on Nov. 1 to Scar Ridge), but my first with vftt. Since I survived the first with 4 total strangers, and now new friends, I wasn't too worried. I don't believe we really had a chance to talk much on the hike...

    Southern Ossipees (NH) Traverse, 11/16/08

A great day in some awesome mountains (well, very tall hills!:)) My first intro to vftt hikers and a very pleasant one at that. So glad to meet the real people, all 17 1/2 of them, behind the chitchat online. Reading VFTT has taught me how much I DON'T know about hiking, trails...

    Research for a book

I think I have spotted that same pointy peak between exit 23 and 24 going north, perhaps around mile post 70-71. It is most obvious on a clear day in the fall when it has snow on top, and the rest of the landscape is brown and green. I also thought some part of Franconia Ridge.

    Southern Ossipees (NH) Traverse, 11/15/08

This sounds like a great adventure. I have been up Mt. Roberts in the winter, but would love to see other parts of the Ossipee range. Put me on the list. We may need a school bus for a shuttle at this rate!!:)

    Successful Scar Summit

Jason, Yes, from the north west. . . . The compass reading was just about 140. We did find a herd path near the top that led to the open woods, and we just seemed to go straight and banged into the cannister. A Disney moment!

    Successful Scar Summit

We looked around briefly for the path to the north Loon summit, but it was darned cold at the top of the lift and we had had a long day. Left for another adventure!

    Successful Scar Summit

Would you let your child head off into the woods all day long with four strangers they 'met' on the internet??? No, but that is what I did on Saturday, November 1. I had been thinking about trying to summit West West Scar, after reaching West/East and the cannister two years ago. I saw an...

I'm not sure how to work these message things. The weather on Tuesday looks awful. Maybe it will be better later in the week. . . . And next week I am wide open, but, I may need some help deciding what gear is needed this time of year. . . I'm definitely a newbie in winter hiking.

    Triple-Play! “Whitewall-Lite” + Shoal Pond + Thoreau Falls: 23-Oct-2008

shoal pond My husband tried to fish Shoal a couple of weeks ago but it was hopeless - too shallow, and 'no fish' to speak of. Thanks for the info on Zealand Pond. It is now on his fishing list. Wonderful trip report and photos!

Did you summit from Loon or from the Kanc? I doubt you tackled it from Little East Pond. Bummer, I could have tagged along!
