Would you pay for hiker insurance?

NO WAY! If it were up to me I'd have ZERO insurance on anything. Whenever I have needed my insurance company (thankfully not too often) I call them , get some good service then a rate increase. I have no doubt that this would be the same deal. I also believe in personal responsibility...

State putting a Toll Gate on the Kanc.

If that toll booth operator looks like Amber Lynn (when she was in her prime) then I'll gladly contribute to help solving NH's budget problems. ;)

U.S. Army proposes helicopter training on Whiteface Mountain

As a retired Army NCO and one time member of the 10th Mountain Division (Fort Drum, NY) AND an avid hiker who has hiked in the Daks, I could easily see both sides of this issue. It's probably best that I leave it at that.

Latest and greatest or "old friends"

"Stick with the old" is one of my favorite sayings. If I have a piece of gear that has always done right by me then I see no reason to discard it until it's life has run out. You can always find bigger, brighter, better and lighter. But I prefer to stick with what I know can do the job for me.

    Would you climb Mt Everest?

No. I was in the Army and did some dangerous stuff there but at least I had some degree of control over my situation. Quite frankly, I just enjoy hiking for the fun of it and the (mental) relaxation. I am perfectly content in the Whites with the 4Ks, sometimes even a 3K. As for the Yaks, no...

Thanks. It's a he. His name is Macavity, named after one of the characters in the musical "Cats". He'll be 11 years-old in May.

    Hooray for Jansport!

I have two Jansport waistpacks that are in great condition after 10 years. Their stuff is sturdy, no doubt about that. I'm glad to hear their customer service is so good.

Is GPS just a 'Stupid Guy Thing?'

While I think it is more important to use a map & compass, I like to use my GPS as well because I like to keep up with technology and I work in the GIS profession. If I'm on a trail though, I'd much rather depend on that map & compass to navigate with.

    Map and Compass Course

If there is an REI near you I would suggest them. I took their map & compass course as a refresher and I thought the instruction was excellent. http://www.rei.com/expertadvice/articles/navigation+basics.html

    Casinos in North Country?

I apologize if there has already been a thread started on this. I'm not looking to start a gambling debate and I do want to keep this about hiking but I recently read the following on the Concord Monitor. Does anybody know what specific locations they are looking at? I am concerned about this...

Lake Placid for winter family distraction activities ?

Been to Lake Placid once for a family vacation but it was during the summer. The place is awesome and sounds like fun during the winter. Hope this link helps. http://lakeplacid.com/flash/winter/z-winter.htm

    Go Bode!

I'm cheering for Bode. When he first came on the scene 4 years ago I didn't much care for his attitude. However a person can mature quite a bit in 4 years and I think he did just that. I've got no problem being in his corner. With the exception of the self-centered Julia Mancuso, I'm cheering...

    Las Vegas in Mid-April?

Chalk up another vote for the Red Rock Canyon. The place is one of the most beautiful spots in the west. I took the bus tour and hiked a few trails as well. Plenty of water is a must.

    bike training

 That is one expensive gym membership. I spend half that where I go now. Plus I make sure to use all the equipment the gym has to offer. I've always loved Spinning but I am not a fan of group exercise classes. With the video instructor it's totally one-on-one and much more enjoyable.

    bike training

Spinning ROCKS! The gym I just joined has Spinning bikes but no classes. Instead you have a video screen in front of you with a video tape of an instructor taking you on whatever type of ride you choose.

Fitness levels and training (What the HECK!!?)

I spend quite a bit of time in the gym either I am doing strength training or cardio; I alternate. As far as the strength training is concerned, I find there are two types of styles. Training for muscular strength requires heavy weights with low reps for each set. Training for muscular endurance...

    Snowshoes

I received a pair of these for Christmas. I've used them a few time and like them very much. I'd have no problem suggesting them to others.

    Why I love REI

Interesting. I have an REI membership at that very same store in Cranston, RI and they made no attempt to contact me about this garage sale. I would think they'd have sent an e-mail to all members.

    Snowshoe pain

True. I find these two to be helpful.
