    Lodgings Around Conway or Lincoln?

If you don't mind a roommate (or several), check out the White Mountains Hostel in Conway. I stayed there last fall, and it was clean, has shower/kitchen facilities and -- best of all -- was cheap! (Around $25-$30, IIRC, and they even had WiFi...)

    Sad Day on Jefferson

Great post, John. As a Wilderness EMT, I've highlighted several of the key concepts that people should keep in mind when reading rescue/recovery stories like this one. Condolences to the victim's family, and props to both the volunteers and professionals who were involved.

Free Mt Everest lecture by Ed Webster

I just finished his book (Snow in the Kingdom: My Storm Years on Everest) not long ago, and it's one of my favorites on the subject of Everest/high-altitude mountaineering. Lots of good pics, too. Thanks for the heads-up, Roy!

"ham radio" walkie talkies in the woods ?

Having worked hard to be able to copy CW at 20wpm to earn my Extra Class ticket back in the day, I was bummed when I learned the FCC had eliminated the Morse Code requirement.

Mt Washington via Lion Head, 2/1/14

If there is not enough snow and/or ice filling in the steepest section it would be virtually impossible for most people to get through some of the crux steep sections down low on the LHWR, as was the case this weekend (8-9/February). Even with technical mixed climbing skills -- i.e., ice tools...

Good First Aid Info With Gear Recommendations

^^^This. Sorry to be a little late to the party here, but I thought mirabela's comment above was worth highlighting. I concur with the other comments that it's less about what you carry in your FAK and more about knowing how to improvise (which a WFA/WFR class will help teach you; a...

    Knots For Hiking

Website: Grog's Animated Knots. They also have a smartphone app. Knots: Munter hitch (for lowering), clove hitch and girth hitch (for lashing stuff), tautline hitch (for tightening tent guylines), surgeon's knot (for attaching bandages or splints).

    Map And Compass Courses

If you end up not finding anything, keep an eye on the AMC CT Chapter events page, as we'll be adding a Backcountry Navigation workshop for sometime in the spring, probably early/mid-April(ish). It will be a one-day workshop, likely somewhere in the central part of the state, to review...

    Government shutdown...

Answering that question would require logical thinking, which is not something Congress (or mid-level bureaucrats, for that matter) is/are known for.

    Carrigain

Will be in NH this weekend and planning to hike Carrigain/Vose on Saturday with a trail buddy. Just wanted to confirm that Sawyer River Road is still open. The map says "road closed in winter", but I don't want to get caught out if it actually gets closed on Sept. 15 or Oct. 1, for example...

    1,000 Views from the Top!

Congrats, Tom! That's a right impressive accomplishment. FYI, I especially like the fact that a quarter of those peaks were climbed in winter. That's "gittin' 'er done" in my book! Too late!

!!! 10th annual Adirondack BBQ and Gathering !!!

Can't make it this year, unfortunately. :( My oldest has her first lead role as Belle in Beauty and the Beast which runs this weekend, so I'll be clapping wildly from the front row tomorrow night, rather than strumming the git-tar 'round the campfire. All is not lost, however, as I'm...

    energy bars

My climbing partner is gluten-intolerant and he's a big fan of Kind bars (as well Whole Foods' gluten-free muffins, which we have to stop and pick up for him just about every trip....) As for me, I'm a food-whore, so any kind of bar usually works -- Clif, Lara, Mojo, Nature Valley...

    Dehydrated food prices going up.

Don't forget to tip your waitress! ;) Speaking of which, I recently snagged a 10-pack of Mountain House dinners -- sampler pack of 3 different flavors, IIRC -- at Costco (of all places) for $39, which is a pretty decent savings from the $6.50-$8.00 pricing typically found at...

Up: A Mother and Daughter's Peakbagging Adventure -- book signing dates

Can't make it to the signings listed above, but lemme know if your press tour ever brings you down to Connecticut! ;) FYI, there's a mini-review/inteview with Trish on the Rock and Ice Magazine website (and, I assume, will be in the next dead-tree version as well...) (Mod: see link from Trish...
