What gear do you dream of getting, or getting rid of....

That's what I'd do. Once the kids are older and you wanna get back into climbing (trust me...it'll happen), you'll be flagellating yourself with a cordelette if you have to re-build your rack at then-current prices when you had a full trad rack that you could've kept in storage. You'll...

What gear do you dream of getting, or getting rid of....

Funny you should mention that. A couple years ago, I saw one of these MH Absolute Zero suits listed on feePay  or one of the climbing boards' for sale forums (can't remember which) and in the description, the seller said that it had only been worn once...to a New York Giants playoff...

A Public Plug for REI's Customer Service Approach

^^^There are the takeaways (bolded), right there. <facepalm> Almost daily I'm in awe of just how poor many businesses' customer service policies and, more importantly, personnel truly are. With so many purchase options these days (thanks to the Interwebs and FedEx/UPS), it incredibly easy to...

    REI dividends now available

^^^Iz troo. I don't think that SWMBO would be keen on putting wedding expenses on my REI Visa card (seeing as that might put a crimp in our 16-year marriage ) but I've been using it for all sorts of stuff like Christmas presents, kids' orthodonture, kids' summer camps, kids' sports...

New Hampshire Fish and Game Search and Rescue Funding Hearing

I'm with ya on the first two; not so much on the third. IMO, the over-reliance on technology is one of reasons behind the increase in SAR. ("Nah, I don't need a map...if I get lost I'll just call 911 on my iPhone and they'll come get me.")

New Hampshire Fish and Game Search and Rescue Funding Hearing

Thanks for the link, Craig. Not saying your numbers are right or wrong, but if we took the $863K SAR cost divided by your $4,000 mission cost estimate yields 215 missions like the Devin Frenette case each year, which sounds way too high. Lemme know if you stumble across any additional data...

Nice find for winter women enthusiasts!

As a winter woman enthusiast, I say: forget the teeny-weenie bikini...full down parkas and insulated pants make the ladies look HAWT!! :D

New Hampshire Fish and Game Search and Rescue Funding Hearing

Billy Joel plays piano, and is the Piano Man. So there! :D The footnote in Craig's chart that shows the SAR costs associated with various types of activities (hiking, boating, hunting, etc.) indicates that the costs are "primarily for personnel and do not include training, equipment or...

Would You Buy a SAR Card?

They make great stocking stuffers for all your hard-to-buy-for hiking friends! ;)

New Hampshire Fish and Game Search and Rescue Funding Hearing

Man, Craig...I laughed so hard at that one that coffee almost came out my nose!! ;) This is a very interesting (and pretty civil, ta boot) thread about a complicated topic. Carry on.

How's this for, "walking it off?!?!"

His trail name should be The Black Knight. "...'Tis but a flesh wound!" :D

New Hampshire Fish and Game Search and Rescue Funding Hearing

Oh, Data Master (I mean you, bikehikeskifish/Tim ;)) is there a breakout on the "other" half of the SAR activity? Presumably, it's hunters, trappers, sailors (drunken or not) and missing childrens. If these fine folk are already contributing to the SAR budget -- either through license and/or...

    Paracord Survival Bracelet

Who got injured...Barbie or Ken? :D I'm guessing you mean 15 feet of cord? (For those of you who have seen Spinal Tap, I'm seeing parallels with the Stonehenge scene here... ;)) Speaking of safety belts, I made one for my hiking/climbing pants out of three feet of 1" tubular webbing and a...
