    2011 Adirondack BBQ and Gathering

Assuming the date works, I'm planning to be there again with the kids and the guitar. If Neil brings his flute again, maybe we can work up a nice Jethro Tull set... ;)

    Who's got spring/summer plans?

Ellen, which route are you hoping to take with IMG? We used them last summer for the Kautz and found them to be a top-notch group. We're planning to go back and do either the Emmons or the Kautz, unguided.

Ice Climber Falls 1,300 Feet And Lives

Scary stuff, fer sure. :( MWAC reports that the climber was in Pinnacle Gully. Having just recently taken the AIARE Level 1 avalanche class, I can say that a 1300' ride down Pinnacle and living to tell the tale is pretty amazing. Hope he heals up quick.

    Softshell pants and temperature regulation

+1 for the Mistrals. They're pretty much all I wear for all cold-weather activities (hiking, ice climbing, mountaineering). Down to 30F w/o baselayer, 30F-10F with lightweight baselayer, below 10F mid-weight baselayer. (I run pretty warm.) PreCip shell pants stay in the bottom of the pack...

In Frostbite Conditions, Keep Yourself Covered -- Word to the Wise

TMI, dude...TMI! Sorry about your frostbite, Trish. I guess the only positive thing, it's not on an area that is typically exposed to cold temperatures. The frostnip I got on the tip of my ear back in high school some 20+ years ago acts as a pretty good thermometer to this day, letting...

    7 Summits with Puck

The only thing worse than snow+spruce traps is snow+spruce traps+mud, which is what we had getting to Iroquois in Oct. '08. We missed you at the Venture crew ice climbing outing! (I have some pics that I'll get to Karen to go with her video, so you can see the fun we had.) Nice TR...

Wal Mart Poles vs the Expensive Stuff

Same here, though I think I got mine at Target. They worked great for a couple years and have been all over the ADKs, Presis and Rainier. For the price, I didn't feel at all bad about hacking them to add a threaded camera mount in place of the cheese-tastic compass mounted in the top of the...

    conditioning for Rainier

+1 Chip, can you send that pic to me at my home e-mail? (I'll print it out and hang it up in front of the treadmill, as training inspiration for our return trip this summer.) :D Why would you need to go without caffeine whilst climbing, when they make this?

    Avalanche danger

That 2007 avy happend a week after my then hiking partner and I skied the length of Avalanche Lake (returning from an up-and-over of Algonquin). My blood ran cold whilst reading the avalanche reports on the forums. Timing is everything.

    conditioning for Rainier

^^^This iz korrekt. This surprised me as well. One of the comments I made on the video shot at Camp 1 was that I didn't realize "glacier travel" meant "glacial pace"! (har-har). Alex, I'd be interested to hear more about your CrossFit experiences and how they relate to mountaineering...

    Climbing Rainier in May-June

Since a September date is an option, I'm guessing you're planning the DC (Disappoinment Cleaver) route, as most of the other routes will be pretty melted out by then. If the guide service offers September climbs, then they must feel confident that the climb can be successful, though you may...

climbing crampons; G14's, another G12 or somehing else ?

You may or not remember that I'm a big Grivel fan (with a couple pairs of their 'poons and a set of ice toolz), so view my opinion accordingly. I'd go for the G14's, esp. if you can get a good deal on 'em and they come with antibotts. For steeper technical stuff, you'll appreciate the...
