More "thanks for the memories" kudos from me. (11 years in Ithaca and surrounding environs.) +1!

    Rescues - East vs. West

Well of course nobody objected...he was out doing something "normal" (i.e., shooting wildlife with guns). The Eagle Scout was doing something "crazy" (i.e., climbing Mt. Washington in winter). We shouldn't have to pay to rescue them crazy people, jus' normal folks, like us! [/snark] If the...

    Adirondacks Eleven

Y'know...I had not considered the "trail widening" issue there. Thanks for pointing it out.

Really? Handjam Crack was one of my favorite parts of the Colvin/Blake trip. Diff'rent strokes, I guess... :)

    Skylight, Gray, and Marcy

"Help...I'm bein' repressed! Come see the violence inherent in the system!" Sorry it wasn't the best hike, yer majesty, but remember: a bad day on the trail still beats a good day at work! ;) Gray/Skylight is on my not-to-distant-future hit list for the 46, so any and all TR's are good...

    "Exit Strategies"--best conference name ever.

Following your first link to the AAI page, I think they should call that logo the "Piolet de Merde" and give it out as an award each year for the group that does the most to promote effective solid waste managment in the backcountry. :D (Having had my first experience with "blue bags" on...

Aye, t'was. We made it to 11,300' before the guides turned us round due to extreme avy risk in the Kautz Ice Chute. Still a 90+ out of 100 trip, though, IMO. My partner and I have some mad crevasse rescue skillz now, thanks to a 2-day class (prior to the climb) and some extra credit exercises...

kautz route on rainier conditions vs Ing Direct or DC ?

Hey kids, as I'm sitting here in the IMG lounge awaiting my turn in the shower (hoo-boy, do I stink!) I just wanted to pop in and let you know that we didn't end up summiting. The Kautz Ice Chute was re-named the Kautz Avalanche Chute by our guides and they turned us round at about 11K. Still...

kautz route on rainier conditions vs Ing Direct or DC ?

Dude, remember what happened to the cat.... ;) I'm sitting here in the lounge at IMG, taking advantage of their WiFi hotspot and Paul's MacBook. We did the 2-day crevasse rescue skool and had a great time. Conveniently, our two guides for the class are two of the four guides on the Kautz...

Koflach boots to be available again next year

^^^This iz korrekt. Liberty Mountain (out of Utah) is their new North American distributor, after GNA folded last year. (I'll probably still get my Grivel gear and replacement partz at The Mountaineer, though...)

    Starbucks Via instant coffee review

Yeah, as instants go, this stuff is pretty good. I find it WAY better than the Crapwell House tea-bag style single serving stuff. I brought some Via along on the winter Presi Traverse and it hit the spot with breakfast. Along with some Espresso Love GU later in the day, I managed to...

    Denali 2010

As another sober bookend to Kristina's successful trip up the West Butt, a Belgian climber died in a fall yesterday on the Cassin. Report here. Condolences to friends and family.

    One day pemi loop?

I know we keep you amused, Mike. ;) Lessee...she just climbed Denali (including spending five days at 17 camp), came home and ran a trail marathon the following weekend. State of mind? Check. Fitness? Double check. I think the thing Kristina may have the hardest time dealing with is...

Avalance on Mt Ranier Hiker missing

Just curious, are you judging that by the photo or was this magnitude cited somehere? I was just repeating the figures in several online reports I read, though 300-400 feet seems to make more sense than 3,000-4,000. (Hey, what's a power of 10 among friends, right...?) Well...

Avalance on Mt Ranier Hiker missing

Wow. They estimate the slab was 3,000-4,000 feet wide! (Hard to escape that one.) It's a little sobering for somebody heading out there next week, I'll tell ya. I guess the one consolation is that we're not doing the Ingraham Direct route. Still... :(
