What I have seen in the Whites are invasives along reclaimed roads and roadsides. I have not seen huge stands of knotweed, Norwegian Maples, Bittersweet etc.

I was just in Yellowstone in mid Sep. They have a similar issue with bison on the roads after dark. They are big dark animal without eyeshine if they would ever bother to look up at you. The speed limit is already at 40-45. Just assume something might be in the road and slow down.

I remember the stuff from Orgo lab. Doesn't seem to have lethal toxicity by itself, but as a strong solvent it can introduce substances through the skin, as previously mentioned. I have heard about it being used in livestock.

My guess they are the quaking aspen that you mentioned...same that grows out west. I can only tell the difference between the bigtooth aspen and the quaking by its leaves...so I am no help in the winter.
Cottonwoods are also in this family but the bark is dark and rough.

I have only heard of one person who has read that....She was in the showers at Pinkham waiting for her quarters to run out...with nothing else to do (how many times does one need to wash thier ankles?) she read the soap label.
Some states also have fees or taxes on fishing/trapping/hunting equipement. The money raised goes into a fund to protect habitat so that the game species do well.
Understood that this is an easily defined group. Hikers and campers not so much so a tax system on our equipment maybe tough to...
