    Our built landscape

Wow, that is exactly what I am looking for! It might be a tad out of my range however. I will check.

    Our built landscape

Thanks, here is a synopsis of what I need: ” In the spirit of John Stilgoe's invitation to go out and explore - go outside, on foot or bicycle, and examine a landscape that is familiar to you. Look up, down and sideways. What do you see? What questions are raised? Which ones can you answer...

    Our built landscape

Once again I need your assistance. In your travels have you ever observed something that was slightly out of the ordinary? It first appeared mundane, yet held your attention longer than one might think it should. It wasn’t necessarily unique, though there was a certain level of fascination with...

    Ski/Hike Combo Trip Zealand Hut

My three season wife doesn’t winter hike so one our girlfriends stands in for her. I call her my wife because she get to slap me around if I get out of line, unfortunately there is no friends with benefits clause.

    Ski/Hike Combo Trip Zealand Hut

Every MLK weekend my winter wife and I stay at Zealand Hut. Over the years I’ve seen scores of families heading in on skis. I have yet to master the technique so I just pull a pulk with my snowshoes.

Trail conditions and best route to test my ski pulk

Just curious, what trip are you preparing for? Although I have never been to Baxter in the winter, from what I’ve seen in photos, the pull is straightforward on a tote road. If I’m pulling to Chimney pounds, I would switch to my snowshoes for that section, which I've hiked numerious times in the...

    Winter Baxter Expedition Advice

My duffle is very lightweight and compresses low in the pulk without any problems.

Trail conditions and best route to test my ski pulk

I too have been practicing my XC skiing and pulling a pulk. I used Tripoli rd and it worked well. You do not need a pass to ski or hike the road in winter. One thing that I did notice is if you are skiing on a non-groomed road or trail on your return trip you can now ski on the new groomed...

    Winter Baxter Expedition Advice

I’ve never been to Baxter in winter, yet I am very familiar with pulling a pulk filled with supplies over uneven terrain. Keep you center of gravity as low as possible in the pulk to avoid tipping it over. If you are breaking trail and pulling the pulk try to keep your stance as wide as...

How Smart is a smartphone in the mountains ?

I like the fact that they used the term walker and not hiker. I wish our media would make that distinction.

    When gear goes bad...

I’m on my third pair of Lightning Ascents. I finally bought any extra pair of crampons so when they go, I will just switch them out. Once I use up the extra pair, I will look for another style of snowshoe. As much as I like my Ascents, I am tired of not know when they will break. The last time...

    Bonds/Zealand/Hale question

I’ve done 9 north to south and 1 south to north. I prefer the north to south because once you hit Guyot most of the climbing is down. Going south to north I was still climbing until Zeacliff. However, if you are doing a south to north, once you come down Hale you only have an easy 2.5 road...

    Trails Safe in Flood Situations

Carla, I can take a quick trip down to the north end (Livermore depot) and take a look for you if you want. My wife works in the Nordic Center on weekends and so far she is schedule to work tomorrow.

New Baxter State Park Groups size rule Summer 2013

I know of one meet up group, which shall remains nameless, that routinely violates the NH 10 person wilderness rule, so it will be interesting to see if they follow the new Baxter rule, or just assume that it doesn't apply to them.

    Zealand road?

Thanks. I was just wondering about the road, not so much about the trail. With this new snow the road should be fine. I will take it slow on the trail so I do not constantly dump the pulp. Also, I have taken it to Zealand at least three times and the last 150 is the hardest, and the last 50 feet...

6 Tufts Students Rescued From Dry River

I tend to agree. I also don’t feel that this is a finable offense. If they are fined, then F&G is basically saying you must be infallible while hiking in the WMNF.

I'm heading into Zealand hut this weekend and now I'm confident that I can use the pulk for supplies.
