6 Tufts Students Rescued From Dry River

F&G might see the situation in a different light. Ultimately it was their responsibility to read the trail signs, it just might mitigate any fine they are thinking of imposing.

6 Tufts Students Rescued From Dry River

Mohamed, you might want to contact Fish & Game, and at least notify them that you were partially responsible. Granted the ultimate responsibility rest with the hikers themselves, yet they did take the advice of a well-respected local who knows the trail system. Just a thought.

    Zealand road?

Anyone know the condition of the Zealand road with respect to snow cover? I plan to pull a pulk next weekend.

WMNF from a West Coast Perspective

I’m torn on this one. I generally us the dungeon to change from the hike up to warm and dry clothing then head out. I’ve been there 5 or 6 times over the years, and it is always nice to know I have a sheltered spot for a momentary respite before heading out. I always liked that fact that it...

I have tentative plans to hike Cannon on Monday as well, though not carved in stone as of yet.

What to use to carry my Hillsounds Pro and BD Contact Crampons

I just use a heavy gauge stuff stack for my crampons, and a lighter gauge stuff stack for my micro’s. Both have worked just fine for the past 5/6 years. If memory serves, both were only a few dollars. I personally do not see any reason to spend a lot of money on a specialty bag, when something...

Wine, is there wine, there must be wine.

Permits for White Mountain National Forest Christmas Trees

Although we cut our own at Rock Estates in Bethlehem, I have often thought of looking for that perfect tree while hiking and coming back in the winter. I would prefer that there was some snow on the ground so I could use my ski pulk.

    Thermos

I just received my new stainless steel Nissan thermos from Campmor. I filled it with hot water and put it in the freezer for 8 hours. When I took it out the water was still too hot to put my finger in. Problem solved! Thanks everyone for your input.

    Thermos

I just checked my two stainleess thermoses and to my horror they are single walled with no vacuum seal. Gee, no wonder why they suck.

    Thermos

I’ve lost count how many times I have broken a glass thermos while hiking. Now I realize that I should use an all metal thermos, yet even if I pour boiling water in it prior to filling it with whatever I plan to drink, it doesn’t stay as warm as the glass. Can someone please give me the name of...

Hiking Food Suggestions for Winter, Above Treeline

How Do I Sharpen my Microspikes?

I did it once with a ******* file, it took forever. My suggestion, retire them and buy a new pair, which is what I eventually did. I now use the old ones when I snowblow the driveway.

Winter hiking- what do you carry in your pack?

Since my clothing options are somewhat unique, it wouldn’t translate well to others. Let’s just say that I always carry micro/crampons/snowshoes for traction and safety. Aside from the normal change of clothing that I routinely do throughout the course of a hike, I also carry a complete change...

Winter hiking- what do you carry in your pack?

Not being super human like others , or being incapable of error like others, I carry enough gear to get me back to the trailhead; be it that day or the next. I carry what I feel comfortable carrying. Others have their own level of comfort, which is their decision and no one else’s.

    Stone churches

I’m doing a photo-essay on small stone churches. I know of two, one on the corner of route 3 and route 302 in Twin Mountain and the other just past the Mountain Washington Hotel. If you know of others would you mind posting. Thanks.

    No good deed goes un-punished

I usually carry three or four Eveready headlamps that I get at Wally World. No great loss if I give one away. I doubt I would even ask for it back. But kudos to you for making sure that got out safe.

    Rocky Branch trail stream crossings

I’ve done Isolation via the Rocky Branch too numerous to count and I’ve only done it once where it wasn’t a slop feast of mud and water everywhere. Even with the Engine Hill bushwhack it is still a mess. My next trip will simply be an out and back from Glen Boulder. Or I wait for ten feet of snow!
