    Budget Pulk

I replaced my PVC poles with chimney sweep poles and attached them to the pulk with casters. On each end I have air compression hose fittings that allow me to place an eye bolt through the hole and then place a locking nut on the other end. I then thread the fitting to the poles, one end male...

    Owls Head 1-29-12

This is my second pair that broke. The crampon that they use is too fragile and always seems to break at the rivet. One is completely broken while the other has a crack at the rivet. I know they will probably replace them at no cost, yet I no longer have confidence that they will not break at...

    Owls Head 1-29-12

Our group would have made better time if they just jettisoned the dead wood, namely me. I was fighting a cold all week, so doing Owl’s Head on Saturday wasn’t the brightest hike to do. Compound that with breaking my Lightning Ascents coming down the slide and having to switch to my crampons for...

    Bonds Traverse, 2/4/2012 (weather permitting)

Once again the date doesn't work for me. Oh well, there is always March.

    Over mitts

That is what I use as my emergency mittens. I put a hand warmer in each at the start of the hike so If I need them, they are already warm.

    Kinsmans 1/19/2012

That is my favorite way up to the Kinsmans. I plan to do it Sunday and with the new snow today and tomorrow, I'm sure I will be breaking trail. I also plan to bring my ASOD.

A different question about winter boots

I’m probably the only person who actually likes my Koflachs. I’ve been wearing ski boots since I was 8 and find the Koflach far more comfortable. They work well for me. I’m not saying I wouldn’t like trying something different, yet right now I would rather have a -20 bag given my budget constraints.

A different question about winter boots

I have Koflach Degre and put my booties inside my sleeping bag at night. As Sabrina mentioned, I also have down booties to wear in camp. One thing that I did differently this past weekend with the temps hovering around -20 in the morning was to put a foot warmer (full pad) in the plastic boots...

"Orange Summits" 4K protest of Northern Pass

I might be bias but my favorite is the Hale photo with Larisa, Alex and Trish. Larisa and Tim (who took the photo) passed me like a blur on the Zealand Road on Saturday.

    sled/pulk/rooftop storage combo design

Yep! On Saturday I followed a group to Zealand who all had 30" tubbs and made the trail very wide so the pulk had no problems. One person did have a very wide child's carrying pulk and had issues.

    Death on Mount Washington

I was at Zealand Hut this weekend and the caretaker is friends with the caretaker who was first on the scene and saw the accident and mentioned the same thing that MJ just posted.

    sled/pulk/rooftop storage combo design

If you are using the carrier on a flat snowmobile or groomed trail you might be ok with skis and having the poles attached in the front. However, if you plan to pull the carrier on hiking or ungroomed XC trails you are going to have some problems with the skis and pole setup. I was one of four...

I might be interested, let me check my dance card for this weekend.

Tripoli Road to become regular campground

Living just 6 miles away there are certain times during the year that I simply will not venture down that road!

    Foot warmers on top?

I do not like the feel of toe warmers directly under my foot, especially after a 10+ mile hike so I place the warmer under my orthotic. Granted it might not be as warm, but it warms the orthotic and then my foot.

    Zealand Rd.

The road was perfect to pull the pulk, with light snow over ice.

    Zealand Rd.

Thanks, I might take a ride this weekend and walk up the road until I hit actual snow. Unlike LL where I can make 5 trips in one day, given the distance with the road being closed, this a one shot deal.

    Zealand Rd.

Does anyone know the snow cover conditions on the Zealand Road? I'm doing a two night trip on the weekend of the 14th and want to haul in my supplies with my ski pulk. If it is dirt, how far up does it go?

Land Gift for Baxter State Park on Katahdin Lake

I hiked to the cabins on the lake this past August with Wendy and Lori and was thinking it might make a nice alternative to our usual spot. It might also be fun to do it in the winter.

    Year-End Hike Plans

I wish I could join you but I'm doing Owl's Head on Thursday and do not have the legs for a Bond trip then Owl's Head the next day. Be safe! P.S. Might join you on Saturday. Isolation would be pushing it for me the day after OH.
