What’s going on with these rocks?

I’ve seen all these rocks recently along White Mountain trails. They look like they burst apart from a single point. Is this a natural phenomenon or a remnant somehow of the logging industry? In front of Galehead hut. Hancock Notch Trail. Hancock Loop Trail. North Twin Trail.

White Mountain Redlining Workbook (29th Edition)

It seems to me that it would be handiest if it listed every trail segment, like this: Crawford Path XXXXHighland Center to Route 302 XXXXRoute 302 to Crawford Connector XXXXCrawford Connector to Gibbs Falls spur XXXXGibbs Falls spur to Mizpah Cut-off and so forth, and you just checked off each...

    Trails with Ladders

There are several metal rungs going up a rock on Saddleback Mountain in Maine, and a metal ladder on The Horn.

Gate on road to Boundary Peak CN side

I accessed Boundary Peak from ZEC Louise Gosford back in ’06. Is this the same place where you were? I thought ZEC Louise Gosford was a public park.

Herd Path Mt. Mansfield: Where does it go?

Who put the kibosh on revealing more information on this? I wish I had noticed this thread before last week — I climbed Mount Mansfield via Hell Brook Trail on Friday, but I didn’t even see the lower end of the Adam’s Apple Trail (was there a sign?), let alone the old Bear Pond Trail going in...

Road status in "western ME" ?

I had no idea what you meant by that, although I guessed it based on TEO’s response. I wish people — not just you, but in general — would spell things out on first reference, rather than assume everyone understands these abbreviations. I think it can be assumed that we all understand AMC or...

Road status in "western ME" ?

‘‘PP’’? Porcupine? Sorry. I haven’t been on any of those roads in eight years. I drove right past the Morton Cutoff twice last week and never even noticed it. It must be there somewhere, though.

Your impression of this summer's temps and rain fall?

Just because it didn’t seem hot where you were doesn’t mean it hasn’t been hot elsewhere. Remember those three-digit temperatures (Fahrenheit) during the Australian Open? Regularly up to 110°, wasn’t it? To paraphrase Colbert, whatever’s happening right now isn’t all that’s happening.

    High Peaks with limited views

Gee, just go a few feet behind the canister — er, summit sign — on Marshall and you get a terrific view.

    [The Horn, North Peak]

I don’t think so. The 2005 AMC Rangeley-Stratton map shows federal land covering The Horn right out across the north peak. Federal land that is not the Navy land, that is, though that is there, too.

    [The Horn, North Peak]

That’s the one. But why would there be old blue paint on rocks, is what I’m wondering. Blue is the color for side paths to the Appalachian Trail, so it seems like there must have been an official trail there at one time. I guess it didn’t necessarily go to the north peak, though; just off of...

    [The Horn, North Peak]

This 3000-footer, the sub-peak of The Horn — The Horn near Saddleback Mountain in Maine, not The Horn near Cabot Mountain in New Hampshire — did it used to have a trail? I climbed Saddleback, The Horn, and Saddleback Junior on Wednesday, and when I returned to The Horn on my way back, walked in...

    Irene Closures & Redlining rules

Regarding red-lining, how persnickety are red-liners? There are countless places where the trail divides. If a red-liner realizes he or she is off the main line, does he or she walk back to cover that missed segment, no matter how short, or just shrug and continue on? What if there’s a blowdown...

    Bushwacking Tips?

Stay out of the col between West and Middle Scar Ridge. Boy, was that awful, trying to climb up to the height-of-land to get back over to Little East Pond, then descend to the pond. Endless blowdown. A nightmare. John Swanson said years ago that the easiest way he found up Scar Ridge was from...

    Shrewsbury Peak, Vermont

I climbed Killington Peak and Shrewsbury Peak on Thursday, and here’s something I just noticed (after transferring my GPS track into the computer): Shrewsbury Peak, near Killington Peak, is not where I thought it was. That is, the named peak is a bump north of the point that everyone assumes is...
