Mob scenes on the trails last weekend

You’re right. The junction of Osgood Trail with Great Gulf Trail is past the wilderness boundary sign (by six minutes, according to the time stamps of my photos of the signs), but the tentsite itself is outside the wilderness boundary, which follows Osgood Trail exactly, apparently. But the...

Mob scenes on the trails last weekend

I’m wondering about groups that are obviously too big (more than 10) for places like the Great Gulf. If a ranger doesn’t happen along, I guess they just get away with it. I didn’t count them, but there was a bunch of little kids, at least 10 of them, on top of that boulder on The Bluff last...

Mob scenes on the trails last weekend

By George, I think you’ve got it. I’m still at the stage of taking alternate trails. My last two hikes have seen my first two forays into the Great Gulf, for instance.

Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx vs. Windows 7 redux

Trip & Waypoint is what came with it. I’ll have to look for this other. Thanks for the tip.

Madison Gulf Trail vs. Adams Slide Trail

Thanks. I was looking at this on the map and in the book last night, forgetting that you had already suggested the loop. Looks like it would be around 15 miles.

Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx vs. Windows 7 redux

From the Devices and Printers: ‘‘The software for this device has been blocked from starting because it is known to have problems with Windows. Contact the hardware vendor for a new driver. (Code 48)’’ I did contact Garmin back in the day and installed updates through the XP computer, so I...

Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx vs. Windows 7 redux

I thought I would try again to use my GPS (a Garmin 60CSx) with the Windows 7 computer we have, which would be a lot easier than always having to haul the old XP one out of the crawl space. I installed the Garmin Trip & Waypoint Manager disk, then plugged in the GPS and turned it on. Windows...

Madison Gulf Trail vs. Adams Slide Trail

Does that photo show a traverse along a ledge, with ladders at either end? How is Sphinx Trail for descending? The book says slippery rocks in a stream, tedious, that kind of thing. But it’s probably better than Six Husbands, I assume.

Madison Gulf Trail vs. Adams Slide Trail

The WMG says that the climb up the headwall on Madison Gulf Trail begins at Sylvan Cascade, but it felt like it began higher than that, at the base of the white rocks which led to the smooth slab. That was about 15 minutes above Sylvan Cascade. That would make the bulk of the vertical rise...

Potable Aqua — does it have an expiration date?

Thanks. I’ll toss them. And thanks for the explanation about disinfecting the threads, too. Much appreciated.

Madison Gulf Trail vs. Adams Slide Trail

I climbed Madiison Gulf Trail last Friday and saw a few red paint blazes, which reminded me of the few photos I’ve seen of the long-discontinued Adams Slide Trail, which also still has some red blazes on it. Which started me wondering why the latter trail was abandoned. Were there any deaths on...

Mob scenes on the trails last weekend

Madison’s summit and Madison Spring Hut were pretty crowded last Friday, too, but I saw only four people during the four miles from Pinkham Notch Visitor Center to the suspension bridge (plus a fifth who was fishing below the bridge), then I had the trail to myself up Madison Gulf headwall and...

Mob scenes on the trails last weekend

I’m pretty sure that the Old Bridle Path Agonies were named by the hut croo. Regarding Bill Bryson’s friend Katz, Bryson has said that Katz was a friend from high school whose name was not Katz, but Bryson gave him that pseudonym before realizing that Katz is a Jewish name. They were in Europe...

Potable Aqua — does it have an expiration date?

I bought two bottles, one of the treatment and one of the taste-improver, 14 years ago. They’ve never been opened, but as far as I know, they’re still in my pack. Are they still any good? Can I trust them? I haven’t looked at them to see what they look like (or even to confirm that they’re...

New Hampshire 200 Highest and New Hampshire 300 Highest Lists

I already climbed the two Garfield Ridge peaks, before there were herd paths. It was the news of the Hitchcock peaks having paths developing that caught my attention. One of my least-favorite and most-confusing bushwhacks was East Hitchcock.

New Hampshire 200 Highest and New Hampshire 300 Highest Lists

I knew if I waited long enough some herd paths would appear.

    Isolation North

Thanks. It seemed like it was pretty much all blowdowns through there. I wasn’t paying any attention to the GPS as I passed by, just eyeballing the terrain. I figured if I saw an obvious place where people had been going in, I would do so, too. If not, I’d worry about it another time. By the...

    Isolation North

I finally got around to transferring my GPS track into the computer, so I was able to get a closer look at the maps. The Garmin National Parks East map says that Gulf Peak is the 4692 bump, while the National Geographic Topo! says that Gulf Peak is the 4774 shoulder. The Topo! is the same as the...
