To GRID or not to GRID that is the question...

How close to finishing the list is summitseeker? That seems to be the bottom line. If he only needs a few climbs to finish, then why not do so. If he’s only done one round of the peaks and doesn’t know if he can hold up over the long haul, then why bother.

    Isolation North

Is there an accepted summit for this Trailwrights peak? Or better yet, a sign or canister? The land definitely looks higher west of the trail, but I couldn’t discern a herd path or even any indication at all that people have been fighting their way through the scrub and blowdowns to get off the...

Owl's Head & 'Whack to Hellgate Brook, 7/11/2014

How would you say the crossing of Franconia Brook where you crossed it compared with the usual crossing on the trail? Any idea?

And here I thought S stood for selfie. I had envisioned a page full of thumbnails, but it won’t let me put up more than 12 at a time, and I don’t have the interest in compiling a bunch of thumbnails into one image here, then uploading that.

    Peak Above The Nubble

Or perhaps a herd path has naturally arisen from all the peakbaggers over the years. When I was there in 2005, the herd path only ran between the false summit and the canister. Lisa, Mount Nancy is an easy one. There’s a well-beaten trail to the top, no bushwhacking involved at all.

    Peak Above The Nubble

Tom, that herd path isn’t the one that was illegally cut some years ago, is it? Gene Danielle forbade anyone from getting credit for the climb who used it.

We stepped carefully, although it wasn’t always easy. Actually, this was August 2009. My fifth time up in the range, and I’d never seen the conditions so good. A month earlier, the conditions up there were the worst I’d ever seen. It took us 45 minutes just to get up Panther from Herald Square...

    Wildcats and Carters

There were people setting up tents in Carter Notch, right next to the trail at the base of Wildcat A, when I was there last September. I should probably have said something, but didn’t. Now I am reminded that there was a pile of lumber — with bright orange tape around it — near the base of...

Moving to SE Pennsylvania... hiking advice?

Watch out for snakes, as they used to say on ‘‘Mystery Science Theater 3000.’’ Isn’t Pennsylvania supposed to be the likeliest of the states that the Appalachian Trail crosses for running into rattlesnakes?

Boy, I don’t like that new Couchsachraga sign at all. What happened to the nice one of five years ago?

Garmin GPS and the distance "issue"

Last time I was on the summit of Bondcliff, I changed the batteries in my 60CSx and reset the computer page so that everything but the time of day was zero. As I set the unit down on a rock next to me, I noticed that the trip odometer advanced to 1 foot, and I remember thinking that that was...

    Maine 4K trail stats

Try The Mountain Wanderer. Steve Smith has a map that shows the Rangeley area peaks, made by the same company that does those glossy maps of the White Mountain notches. I haven’t seen it, but maybe it would have what you’re looking for. Also, check Views From The Top trip reports and trail...

REI has Garmin 62stc on sale

I was over this for a while with Garmin, changing permissions and all that stuff, uninstalling and reinstalling the software, and the GPS just isn’t seen by Windows except for the ‘‘known compatibility issues’’ warning. Garmin even offered to trade me a refurbished one for my old one and $100...

REI has Garmin 62stc on sale

Yes, I do have the 60CSx. But it doesn’t work with the Windows 7 computer; I always have to drag the old XP out of the crawl space to transfer tracks or do anything with the GPS. The GPS and the newer computer did work together for a while, but since something in the computer was replaced...

... for $249.93. It’s a great price, but is it a good deal? Not as accurate as the 60 series, perhaps?

Cedar Brook Trail herd path that bypasses Cedar Brook crossings

My bad regarding the name of the brook. I guess that what I remembered as the herd path is now the official trail. During my return from Mount Hancock, I made the first two crossings without any difficulty (from Hancock Loop Trail to Cedar Brook Trail, then the first crossing back to the...
