    Product Review: Kahtoola MICROspikes

Ragged Mountain, which appears to be the only internet retailer for these, has only small size in stock. I sent an email to Kris at Hillsounds asking if there was a local distributor in my area (Berkshire County), or could I also buy them direct. His suggestion; "I have spoken to Ragged...

    Product Review: Kahtoola MICROspikes

I thought Stabilicers were the cat's meow. Haven't used them in two years now, since I purchased the Kahtoolas. Most of my time on them is spent on glare ice while ice fishing, but I have also put them through their paces in the woods. Great piece of equipment!

Greylock via the Thunderbolt Ski Trail 12/18/09

It was about 10 above when I left the trail head for the Thunderbolt Ski Trail. The climb up was pretty straight forward as I didn't need snowshoes, as long as I stayed on the traveled path. Micro-spikes worked great for traction! I've used them with excellent results on flat ice while ice...

    Berkshire Backpacking

Off the top of my head, the only non-AT leanto's in the Berkshires are on Greylock. That is a little off the I-90 corridor though, but only 45 minutes. The previously mentioned Bellows Pipe LT, which can be accessed either by the Bellows Pipe Trail out of N Adams or the Thunderbolt Trail out of...

Greylock via Gould Trail, and visits to Pecks Falls and Indian slide

A second trip to Greylock today, this time to check out the base of the Indian Head slide. Started at the parking area on Gould's Road, and made my way up the mountain using existing trails in the Greylock Glen. Heading as far west as I could, It was time to break out the GPS, and bushwack to...

Greylock via Gould Trail, and visits to Pecks Falls and Indian slide

A cool start to a morning hike up Greylock from the Gould Trail. The Gould Trail had some water in it after Saturday's rains, but not too bad. This trail gets some pretty good maintainance of it's water bars. The first scheduled attraction was a trip over to the Peck's Brook leanto, to check out...

Cellar hole and quarry search on Sykes Mountain in Pittsfield

Jim Moore and I had our appetites whetted on a trip we took last month up to the Pulpit Rock area of Sykes Mountain in Pittsfield/Washington. Judging by the amount of stone quarries evident on the mountain, we decided another trip to look for the cellar holes and quarries of the Sykes(Sikes)...

    Taconic Skyline Trail

My original intention with this hike was to start at the top of Rt. 20 in Hancock, and head north to Berry Pond on the Taconic Crest Trail. I had spent the previous night searching the internet for trail descriptions of the TCT, but there were very few descriptions, and most were hazy at best...

    Northern slide in Greylock's Hopper

It's way cool in there! Some views require some effort though, that's for sure.

    Northern slide in Greylock's Hopper

This slide came down on 8/7/1990, the same year as it's much larger cousin on the other side of the mountain (Indian Head slide). The slide is approached through the Haley Farm parking lot, and the Money Brook trail. Follow Money Brook trail for 1.25 miles to the bridge that crosses Hopper Brook...

    Greylock Cycling

Upon further review, and talking to a friend who lives near there, the road is passable. However, he informs me that Phizer bought some of the property the road crosses, and has started mining the area. He warns me that there is a detour around the area that is very obvious, as 4 wheelers use it...

    Greylock Cycling

There is a West Mt. Road that heads southwest from Adams to the trailheads for the Cheshire Harbor trail and the Gould trail; That road is paved. I assume you're referring to the road that runs north along the east side of Ragged Mountain, and ends at Reservoir Road in North Adams; that...

    Mt. Greylock Road

    Mt. Greylock Road

As of today, the Notch Road, from North Adams, was filled with branches. The road is not safely passable for vehicles. The road itself looks beautiful, but there looks to be some peripheral work yet to be done, mostly removing all of the erosion barriers along the road.

    New slide on Greylock?

I decided to try and find the 'new' slide that I had seen from MGRHS last week, before the trees leaf out and the black flies break out. Ed Seguin and I started the day by getting the view from the high school again. This time I noticed the slide wasn't as pronounced as it was last week. I wrote...
