Trail across Brodie Mnt. (Berk. Cty.)

We took an airplane tour of Berkshire Cty last year, and the foundations for the wind towers were quite obvious, on the southern end. those towers are not up, as there is some kind of environmental impact delay. If you haven't seen Jiminy Peak's new wind mill, off a shoulder of Widow White's Peak...

more New England mountain lion rumors

There have been a couple of sightings in the Berkshires of recent. One was seen by two people on Mountain Drive in the outskirts of Pittsfield. Then a week ago, an email with a game camera photo of a mountain lion was making the rounds. The one I received came from a friend of mine who says...

Trail across Brodie Mnt. (Berk. Cty.)

Does anyone know if there is a continuous trail across the Brodie Mnt. Range? Specifically from Brodie Mnt. Road north to Sheeps Heaven Mnt; north to the top of the former Brodie Mnt. ski area; Then north along the ridge to Waubeeka Country Club in S.Williamstown? Topo shows some trails going...

    map and compass reading course

Yes it's called the Boy Scouts of America. As far as being comfortable, head to a local park or forest that you're familiar with, and practice m+c skills. I think the hardest skill to master is allowing (or not allowing) for declination. Once you get that down, the rest will fall into place.

The Sun is Shining - Thank God!

Fred, you jinxed me! I haven't seen Old Sol in 2 weeks now. Can't hike, can't fish, can't work in the yard. The only thing I can do is work on Mrs. mass'es "honey do" list. Thanks a lot, pal!

    Finally we finish Big Slide

That's just fantastic! What a thrill for you and your kids to do that as a family! Those are memories they will never forget!! Mininmass and I met you at the Giant trailhead in the dark after Neil's 46th. Again, congratulations and keep on hiking.

Great pics Fred! The spider may not be in focus, but it's easy to see that he was a heifer! Thanks!

West Mill Brook Wyman and Bear

Oh thanks, Buddy! Now I've got another thing to put on my 'got to check out' list! Seriously, every TR from that area whets my appetite. What access did you use, and how far were you able to drive in?

    Questions about Avalanche Pass

Sully, that's a tough one. The trail from the Loj to Av. Lake is very straight forward, and well maintained. From the north end of AL to the Hitchups does require some rock scrambling, and the HM's are toward the southern end of the lake. But even if Gram can't do the scramble, it's still worth...

    Neil finishes the 46!

Justin, I forgot all about that spider! He was one big arachnid ! So is Ocsana (sp?) ever going into the woods after our little journey? My son thoroughly enjoyed the entire thing, even the walk out in pitch blackness. I know you left the Ark when we did and I didn't get home till 3:30 AM. I did...

    Neil finishes the 46!

Tom R, those are some great pics of the day! I love that pic of the Washbowl Cliffs! My first time camping in the ADKs was at the lookout on the Ridge trail just before the Washbowl. Back then there wasn't a NO CAMPING sign there. That's what hooked me into the area, that view of the Chapel Pond...

AT in MA: North Mountain question

RnR, the trail is relatively easy, especially if you go from Dalton to Cheshire. The trail from Cheshire to the Cobbles is a little steep, but not too bad. The entire mountain that lies between Cheshire and Dalton is called North Mountain, there is no particular peak with that name. The hike...

    Is Macomb A Safe Hike?

I think the only discomfort you may experience on the descent of Macomb Slide is that you may get a little gravel down the back of the boots. Unless you're wearing gaitors. It's a lot safer than going down a bare rock slide.

Saddleback/Basin - What is the best approach?

Rick, having gone with Tim up the infamous 'wrong way' slide, it really wasn't too much of a bushwack through the thick stuff. Now if you took the slide that culminates at the end of CC Brook, I'm not sure what the conditions are, but I can't imagine it's too much harder, except that it brings...

    Hiking Allen Solo?

Just watch for the red algae on the Allen slide, cuz that stuff is slick. And don't try climbing down there in the dark. Other than that, the miles do seem to go by quicker with someone to talk to, and there are a lot o' miles to do on Allen. Good luck and have fun!
