    Campsite suggestions near Loj?

My son and I are heading up on Monday, and we are going to stay at South Meadows. I've never stayed there before, so what are the chances of getting a site on Monday? What can we expect there? Thanks.

Saddleback/Basin - What is the best approach?

As Tim has stated, the distance from the top of the "wrong way" slide to the Range trail wasn't too far. I think it only took about 10 minutes to reach it. The view of the Saddleback cliffs from the top of WWslide was pretty impressive, certainly an angle that you can't get from anywhere else...

Is there a new shelter at Slant Rock?

I agree with Dick on the Slant Rock area. The last time I went through there, some of the remains of the old LT were piled up near the rock, although that may have been removed by now There is a nice view of the LT as you descend the Shorey Shortcut.

    shoreys shortcut?

I think it's a much maligned trail, and I agree with Pete, the 'shortcut' part leads one to think it's Jacob's Ladder. It definitly beats having to hike all the way to the Haystack cutoff, though. I've stated in other forums that it could have been laid out to go right up the valley to the north...

    Couch to Emmons Bushwhack.

Neil, if you ever get the chance, buy the book,"Of the summits, Of the Forests". It's published by the 46rs, and is excellent reading. Any way, there's quite a few stories in there of the interactions of some of the origional 46rs with the hermit of the Cold River, Noah John Rondeau. The...

    Sewards - Best Itinerary?

The ground cloth was just for keeping you bag clean from the floor of the LT. All of the LTs in the area have floors. Go for it!

Allen and Grey, the end of a quest

NICE JOB!! I can only imagine the joy of reaching your goal together as a father and son. I hope to enjoy the same elation in a few years when my son finishes his 46. Now comes the fun part, you can go and do whatever you want. Got any plans?

    Sewards - Best Itinerary?

Rick, if you went in real lite, you wouldn't have to haul a backpack up the CBT. Just throw a groundcloth and a lite bag to sleep in, plus whatever food you need for the assault on Seymour. Sleep in WB leanto. All that should fit into your daypack without a big increase in weight. When I do the...

    GPS oddity

Just last month, I downloaded the newest updates from the Garmin site, so I should be good with that.

    Sewards - Best Itinerary?

Rick, what if you went with a lite overnight pack, and did D,E and Seward. Come down off of Seward via the northern mud wallow to the Blueberry Trail, and stay at the Ward Brook LT. The next morning, bang off Seymour and be back at the trailhead in the early afternoon. That mess between...

I'll be going to the ADKs later this week, so I will let you know. Thanks.

    GPS oddity

Thanks for all of the helpful suggestions. I'm going to give Dougs suggestion of clearing the memory again when I start the hike a try. FWIW, when I'm at the computer and I turn the GPS on to download waypoints and routes, the first thing I do is to put it into "use with GPS off" mode. It...

    wild harvest: berries!

Jim, I remember when we did Allen at this time last year, there where raspberries all through the Floyd blowdown areas. That's a good 12 hr. hike as you know, but a few extra minutes gathering those sweet darlings was well worth the extra time. Tom and I were on the top of Lenox Mountain, at...

    GPS oddity

I have this weird problem that keeps occuring with my Garmin E-Trex Vista. Whenever I download the track from a hike I've taken to one of my mapping programs, I end up getting this line on the map.It extends from where I turned the GPS on to where I ended my last hike. The problem is that I make...

    Noonmark (that’s right, Noonmark)

Tim, a peak with a trail? I thought you might have forgotten how to use one of those things. It's good to hear that the "First Family" of the ADKs did another group climb.

Which topo software program is the best?

DB, I own NG Topo, Delorme Topo 4.0, and Garmin Map Source. The Garmin product I use strictly for downloading maps to my Garmin GPS. Frankly, that's about all I use it for. The Delorme 4.0 was the first mapping tool I bought. I would have to say that the maps they use are not as accurate...

    Lilian Brook Trail

The general consensus does seem to be that the area is opening up a little. Or as Doc says, maybe a path is more noticeable through the blowdown. Joel from Adirondack Journey had a memorable time in the Lillian Brook area in 2001. http://www.adirondackjourney.com/Dix_1.htm New Page 1 Let...

    Allen from the East

This thread got me thinking. If the East River Club ever decided that they have had enough of hikers crossing their land to get to Allen, and they posted the land as off-limits, where would the legal access to Allen be? Is the route from the east any shorter or longer, distance wise? Obviously...

    basin and saddleback

dib,if you think there's some elevation loss from the Shorey to the Range trail, it's going to get serious if you go on to the former Snowbird site to get water. Not to mention it's in the opposite direction of where you're going. Fill up at Slant Rock and you'll be fine. Enjoy!
