Bear Cannisters - Let the circus begin

Last fall, myself and two hiking partners spent an hour and a half talking with a NYSDEC wildlife biologist, at the Garden. He was getting his radio telemetry equipment set up to monitor a couple of "problem' bears in the JBL area. Only 2 hours earlier, we had passed the remains of an improperly...

    GPS/Mapping Tool.

Neil, I purchased one of the grid tools a couple of years ago. At first, it was a very useful piece of equipment. I used it to find the UTM coordinates of a waypoint that I wanted to manually enter into the GPS. However, now I use the Topo programs to enter waypoints. Much quicker and easier...

    GPS mileage versus actual

For what it's worth, I thought Jeans answer was the best! Make it so #1.... OK, lets see if I can make sense of this, Mark. I made 7 waypoints on my Topo software, which I downloaded to the GPS as a waypoint only, no route. The Topo told me the walk would be 7.1 miles, if I walked in a...

    GPS mileage versus actual

While taking a little stroll through the lovely Berkshire woods yesterday, I ran across an anomaly with my Garmin E-Trex Vista. Using both National Geographic'sTopo program, and Delorme's Topo 4.0, I mapped out a bushwacking rout. I positioned waypoints on the maps, and drew a track from point...

Bear Cannisters - Let the circus begin

Zac, Bearvaults link to EMS shows them as having it, but perhaps only on line. To those who already own a Bearvault, how exactly does the lid close? The product detail section doesn't go into it. I would hope it's more than a screw top. The site also mentions the BV having 'strap guides'...

    coleman white gas

One advantage of Coleman fuel over gasoline is that if your canister of Coleman leaks into your pack, it evaporates much faster than gasoline, and leaves minimal odor. If the Coleman fuel absorbs too much moisture, that could be a problem in below freezing temps.

    Santanonis

Silver, When I did the Santonini Range, my origional intention was to do all 3 in one day from the parking lot. Didn't happen. Santonini and Panther were all I could get in with a slower partner. When I did Couch last summer, there was a very young couple who were doing all 3, but they weren't...

    WOOO HOOO!!!!! VFTT shirt arrived

Just received mine the other day, with a nice card from Maddi, explaining that she didn't feel the quality of the logo on one shirt was up to par. She refused the one shirt, and will re-ship the replacement as soon as possible. That was very kind of you to do that, and the card was a nice touch...

    Couch and Allen

Crysdale, the only thing I can tell you is that last Aug. when I did Couch, the Bradley Pond trail was horrendous. I can't imagine it's even that good this time of year! Expect to see Kenny and Vic from "Most Extreme Challenge" taping a show there. Allen I would ASSume is decent, although...

    Adirondack Slide Climbing stories.

Wrong Turn Slide......I like it Tim! My most memorable slide was not in the ADK's, but in the Berkshires. I climbed down the "Indian Head" slide on the east face of Greylock, only a year after it came down, circa 1991. There were some spots that were not passable due to steepness, or loose...

    Easiest/Hardest 4000 Footer?

The Easiest? I would have to give that one to Street and Nye, after the approach trail was brushed and flagged. The hardest? In my book, it's a tie between Couchsachraga and Allen. Couch was a pain for me because of the MXC (I mean Bradley Pond) mud trail; the infamous swamp in the Couch col...

    Ice Climbing

Shadow, our Scout troop was driving back from a weekend at Placid. We stopped at Roaring Brook real quick and didn't see anyone. However, on our way by Chapel Pond, we did see 3 people climbing a chute on the other side of the pond. Maybe that was you, around 9:00ish? The boys all took pictures...

Trap Dike Fall. Orig post at NEICE

Fred, I'm so glad the two of you are OK! That must have been a harrowing experience for you, and I can't begin to imagine what Allen went through! Jeez! Thanks for sharing this.

    Trap Dyke

I don't know if ice climbing is for me! Not only do you have to know your sh#%, but there is obviously a state of mind involved in this! That report that KZ linked was truly scary. Written in the first person like that really brings it home. I'm so glad no one was seriously hurt! My guess is...

New Tower on the Taconiuc Crest Trail?

That is quite an eye opener! I'm not against finding alternate sources of energy, but at what cost? The three opinions at the bottom of your link to Iberkshires are interesting.

New Tower on the Taconiuc Crest Trail?

jfb, you say they're going to be bigger than the ones in Vermont?! Oh my God! If you've ever climbed to the top of Spuce Hill in Florida/Savoy, there's signs warning not to disturb the hawk-monitoring equipment there. I wonder what impact the wind turbines will have on the hawk migrations over...

New Tower on the Taconiuc Crest Trail?

That is very interesting! Has anyone everseen the windmills on Rt. 100 in Vermont heading north out of Stamford? They're huge! I understand that there is an effort underway to add more. I'm not 100% sure, but I thought the windmills on Brodie Mnt. never got the full go-ahead that was needed...

New Tower on the Taconiuc Crest Trail?

Bob, it's not a cell tower? The only place around here that I've heard of possible wind generation is in Rowe and Florida, but that's on the other side of the Hoosac valley from there.

    Gothics--Ribbon Slide=TrueNorth Slide?

My understanding is that the entire slide that looks like an upside-down Y is the Ribbon-True North Slide. When you head up the Orebed Trail, the first major brook crossing you come to after the leanto is the one you want to take. As I recall, it's .45 of a mile past the leanto. The brook...
