    FOT48-Whiteface

Topofgothics and I started at the Ferncroft trailhead a little after 8:00 (an hour past my planned start time!) in absolutely perfect weather. The Blueberry Ledge Trail was as dry as a bone and much easier than I anticipated given the white mountain guide description. The hike up to the ledges...

    Cath Goodwin Blitzes the NH48!

Simply amazing and impressive Cath. While doing something of this magnitude is not in the cards for me, I can totally relate to the desire to push oneself through the "I wanna quits" that come along with anything that forces us to our perceived limits. The feeling of personal satisfaction when...

Blueberry Ledge Trail on Whiteface (NH)

Thanks everyone for the feedback. It looks like Saturday will be dry so I'm going for it! I'll come down a different route though since I'm planning on heading over to passaconaway after I take down my flags. Hope to see some folks up on the peaks for this very special event.

Borah Pk, Highpoint of Idaho. 07-29-2010 (A late TR)

Thanks for posting Julie. I only have three "tough" highpoints left and this is one of them. It's great to have the photos you posted. So, how bad was it really? I have to admit, this one has me a little nervous.

Blueberry Ledge Trail on Whiteface (NH)

I was thinking of hiking this trail for FOT48 but I've not been on it before. The White Mountain Guide reads like it could be rough given the fact that my pack will be full and unstable with 4 foot long aluminum pole sections, flags, and other gear. Any first-hand beta?

Highpoint: Utah. Kings Pk (13 528 ft). July 20, 2010

Great photos Timmus! I did King's Peak a few years back by the same route (minus the scree chute!) and never saw another person for the whole three days! Did you have moose encounters at Dollor Lake? I have some amazing photos and videos of them hanging out right next to my tent!

Highpoint : Montana. Granite Peak (12799’) Southwest Couloir- July 24th 2010

Wow! What an amazing climb, I would have needed three rolls on the way down that slope:eek:! Awesome trip, and congrats...

    Best route to Redfield

If you go from the Loj, you can do the loop and go through Avalanche Pass which is stunning. If you go from Tahawus, you have a miserable walk up the "road" from Upper Works to Calamity on boulders and lots of mud. It's such a crappy trail you can never get a good cadence going. But that's...

    Skylight, Gray, and Marcy

Sounds like a great day to me! I love that climb up the backside of Marcy. If you haven't been on Skylight before, you must return when you have the views. (Can a lowly servant tell a King he must do anything?)

    Mt. Shasta Climb in August

Don't try butt-sliding too early in the mroning... it's pretty scary if it's still real frozen:eek: And listen to Jay, that nalgene nearly took my head off:D!

    Colden (4-11-10)

Trail Conditions: The trail from the HPIC up to Marcy Dam is typical Spring conditions... mud in all the usual spots. Some sporadic ice from there up to the Avalanche Camps but not much at all. From the trail junction at the old leanto sight, there is much more snow. Snow, mud, snow mud... etc...

    Whiteface and Esther (4-3-10)

Trail Conditions: Went up from the ASRC. The trail up Marble Mountain was atrocious! Practically a river. Large quantities of water running down and at the lowest level is completely exposed. As you get a little higher there is still some snow cover but you break through regularly to as much...

We stayed on the trail up the side of the slide. Sorry if my post wasn't clear on that fact!

    Carrying Full Crampons

I find that I use crampons less often since I started using MSR's, but I still always carry them. Like others have said, when you need them, you need them and it's worth carrying them along. It sometimes means making a summit, or getting back down safely.

    Dix (3-1-10)

Dix from Round Pond is well broken out. Snow drifts back in quickly in the usual spots (tracks didn't remain for more than a few minutes on the ridge). The steep ascent up the slide is not very well consolidated so there's quite a bit of backward slipping or needing to kick in steps. Used...

Lake Placid for winter family distraction activities ?

There are tours of the Olympic complex, skating on the world class Olympic skating ring, taking a shot at a bobsled ride, cross-country skiing on the jackrabbit trail, dogsled rides on Mirror Lake, etc... Lots to do for everyone! If your family wants a less intense day, there are all the cute...
