Met Topofgothics (who is thru-hiking the AT... his journal is at http://www.trailjournals.com/topofgothics) at the Outlook Ave (in Chesire) AT crossing. It was a humid day but not too bad for hiking. The early start on little sleep led me to hike with a cup of coffee for the first 500 feet of...
Can't agree more Gig! How about roping up this winter? I want to get my significant other trained in doing some serious winter climbing so I have someone else to drag up the big mountains with me:D. I'd love it if you would be willing to help me teach him the skills.
WOW! What an awesome trip and beautiful climb. Like Giggy says, it's about trusting your team! Nice job everyone. And great trip report Gig. You're writing brings the reader into the trip without really making us hang in the crevasse with Arm;).
Topofgothics started the AT on March 21. He crossed into New York yesterday and is looking forward to seeing folks out on the trail. Feel free to follow his progress here www.trailjournals.com/Topofgothics and go say Hi! and do some hiking with him along the way.
What an amazingly well-written TR Bob. Glad everything turned out well. I just find it pretty wonderful that the severe symptoms didn't hit until you surfaced! Gotta love fate...
Hi Nancy!
I know you said you were planning October instead but just in case anyone is interested, I was on Algonquin. Iroquois, and Wright on Saturday and there was too much rain for bugs! But Sunday I did Phelps and Tabletop and the black flies were terrible. At lower elevations they were...
Mt. St. Helens, even just around the base (no permit needed) is a great hike. I would also ditto the Columbia River Gorge area. It can be a fantastic driving tour or you can get out and hike as much as you want. Tons of beautiful waterfalls all along the route to the gorge, and then the gorge...
Trail conditions: Nearly perfect! No snow until between the second and third Brother. Then it's hard-pack and some ice. I took all my gear with me today (Yak-trax, snowshoes, and crampons) but didn't need any of it. Still lots of snow in between the third Brother and the trail junction but...
Trail conditions: Sweet! Took the Wedge Brook. Cold morning so the bare trail was mostly solid but with an occassional small mud hole. No snow to speak of until you start the steep pitch up above the campsite. Then it accumulates quickly. Barebooted until the junction then used micro-spikes...
Hoosier Hill is Indiana and Woodall Mountain is Mississippi...
P.S. Topofgothics passed the 100 mile mark (he's actually at 130) and finally found some sun!
I went to the calling hours tonight and met HarryK there. There were tons of people all paying their respects. It was obvious how well liked he was and how many lives he has touched. I shared with Carol (his wife) and the "kids" that threads were running on the forums so that when they were...
What a huge loss. Shin was a great person to hike with and I was fortunate enough to have shared a few winter peaks with him. He only climbed in winter, summers were saved for his other passion - his boat! My best to the love of his life, his wife Carol! Great pictures Ed. I know the two of...
Just got home from a whirlwind road trip and thought I'd share a little trip report!
Day 1
Left work early on the 19th to drive to Buffalo to pick up Topofgothics (who is now officially homeless) so I could shuttle him down to Georgia to start out on the AT. Part of the deal was that we'd take...
Excellant photos, and great video! As I said on the other site, it was good to meet you (sort of). Sunday was almost as beautiful on the range as your photos from Saturday look.
(Did Len get his camera back?)
When the bear, coyote, moose, and deer come in and use my bathroom, they flush so I don't ever see it! The least I can do is hide mine when I'm in their space.
(P.S. I don't think I'll follow Rik anymore...)
It was sooooo good to see you on the trail Nancy! And to finally meet BoB! No more "close encounters" for us!
Here's my trip report I posted on another site.http://forums.adkhighpeaks.com/showthread.php?t=7481

Thou shalt pay penance for trespassing on untrodden earth when thou dost shower after the hike.
