18 days of increasing insanity & 1 little Cascade cure

Day 1: Break my toe while I'm getting ready for a long weekend of backpacking. Don't cry when it breaks, don't cry when I re-set it. I figure "it's just a toe" and I plan to get a couple hours sleep and head out for the weekend. Day 2: Wake up at 2:00 am, can't get my foot in my boot... Now I...

Just a Moment, Before We Drift Away (Part I)

Beautifully written David. Sounds like the mountains have welcomed you back with open arms! (As if anything else could ever be true) Glad you broke that curse! If only we were all cabaple of this vision. Unfortunately, for many of us the fact that there is so much to be "seen" (and confuse)...

    Catskill 35 question

I was always comfortable hiking solo on marked trails, the bushwhacks were another story. Joecedar's recommendation of Rusk and Halcott as starters is a good one. It really did just take time (and successes) to improve my confidence. I was initially nervous about solo camping in the...

Haystack for 46 Under Sunny Blue Skies

CONGRATS!!! About time! Again, sorry I couldn't join you. I was really looking forward to it. But in my rush to get ready the night before I broke my toe. I still set my alarm and when it went off at 2:00 am the first thing I did was try to get my boot on. Needless to say, I'm sidelined for...

    Catskill 35 question

I completed the Catskill 3500 all solo. I slowly built up my map and compass skills while doing so, and got through it just fine. Took me a few tries to get Balsam Cap and a few more to get Rocky, but once not only my skills but my confidence with map and compass improved, I snagged them...

The Devil in a Day: Devil's Path Traverse, Sat. May 17

Nice job everyone and fantastic trip report Una. I know that place in your head but out of your body that happens on big days! If I hadn't already had plans to be in the Whites this weekend I would have joined you. But I doubt I could have kept up! I love the Cats, and the DP is a route...

    Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Madison

Date of Hike: Friday May 17, 2008. Trail Conditions: Took Lion Head (summer route is open) up to Washington. Solid snow cover on the Tucks fire road from the winter route turnoff, but no need for traction. Up Lionhead, snow peters out pretty quickly but what's there is soft and crappy. Lots...

Have a blast Team Dom! Jealousy and living vicariously don't even begin to describe it ;)! Denali is my dream and has been for years. I can't wait to read all about it and then pick your brains when you get back! May the force be with you :D

Park closures in CO & WY

When I was in Colorado last summer, there were entire sides of mountains where all the trees were dead. From a distance it looked cool with a very pretty shade of orangey-red but as you got closer you could tell it was just dead pine needles. These insects have caused a lot of damage out there!

    Dix (from Round Pond)

Date of Hike: Sunday May 4, 2008 Trail Conditions: Spotty snow starts about 2300', total coverage by about 3000'. LOTS of blowdown, mostly small stuff but some big ones too. As soon as I went into the woods from the slide, the snow was deep and soft. Put snowshoes on at that point, wore them...

    Cornell and Friday

I've done Friday from Cornell. It was the thickest stuff I've ever whacked through. I wound up on steep cliffs on the east side and had to head back up to come down in a different area. It was a very slow journey out and back!

    Algonquin, Iroquois, Wright 4-19-08

Date of Hike: Saturday April 19 Trail Conditions: Still not TOO bad... From HPIC to the Algonquin/Marcy split it's mostly icy and muddy. The lower section of the trail up to Alg is very wet and very muddy. Almost no snow cover. Once you get a little elevation, there's still lots of snow and a...

    Phelps, Tabletop 4-16-08

Date of Hike: Wednesday April 16 Trail Conditions: Trails are still in pretty good shape. From the HPIC up to Marcy Dam, the trail was icy lower down with some bare spots as you worked your way up. Most wood bridges are exposed and most snow bridges are gone. From the dam up to the Phelps...

    Sawteeth, Gothics, Armstrong 4/6

Date of Hike: Sunday April 6 Trail Conditions: On the way in the Lake Road was as hard as cement (on the way out, there was a couple of inches of slop on it). Snow depth is definitely lessening! The water is flowing pretty good and most streams are open (or easily opened when you step on...

Big Slide (via the Brothers) 3/25

Date of Hike: Tuesday, March 25 Trail Conditions: Very good trails. The ledges were starting to poke out of the snow when I was on my way up, and there was significantly more melt-out by the time I was on my way back down. The trail from the third brother over to the junction with the red...

Giant and Rocky Peak Ridge, 3/23

Date of Hike: Sunday, March 23 Trail Conditions: Virtual highway up to Giant. Nice icy crust on top of everything that thankfully someone (Thank-you Pin-Pin;)) had crunched through yesterday. If the trail to Giant was a highway then the trail over to RPR was a long abandoned jeep road:D...
