    My winter finale = Priceless

Neither "Grace" nor "Coordination" are my middle name. I can hardly walk without falling down:D, skiing is not an option for me!

    46 at last.

Congrats Neil. I have to agree, those pictures could have been from anywhere! They look just like mine from the summit of Redfield on that day;).

Winter 2008 Recap, and a hike up Dix & Iroquois Peaks

Excellant read Bob! You always do pretty amazing stuff when you're solo. I tend to be much more conservative when I'm by myself. I'm up for those remaining Dixes with you next year!

    Algonquin, Iroquois, Wright 2-16-08

Trail Conditions: Virtual highway up to the summit of Algonquin. Trail over to Boundary/Iroquois veers to the left and there are many spruce traps along the way, although as long as this current trail lasts you can see and avoid them:D. Trail to Wright has a good snow foundation over all that...

    Sawteeth 2-14-08 (via Weld Trail)

Trail Conditions: Lake road is it's typical snowmobile highway. The trail up from the Dam starts out with about 4 inches of new snow. Gets progressivley deeper as you gain elevation. By about 3200' you can no longer make out the trail. From the Gothics Sawteeth col up, the snow was breaking...

Nippletop and Dial from Elk Pass

Date Hiked: 2-9-08 Trail Conditions: Trail was well broken up to the Colvin/Blake junction. Just a single set of prints, already mostly filled in, from there up. Lots and lots of snow which translated to lots of work! Trail from Nippletop to Dial was really rough, lots of blowdown and so...

Things to see around Rainier on a couple days off ?

It's on the right hand side of the road if you're heading towards the mountain from Whitaker's. It's called the Apple something (Sherpa, you must remember!) but it was great food and really nice people. I agree that hiking around St. Helen's would be great, but I think it was closer to 2...

    Algonquin and Wright

Algonquin and Wright 2-3-08 Date of Hike: 2-3-08 Trail Conditions: Beautiful! There is a coating of pellet-like snow (that doesn't really consolidate, it just moves around...) on top of a very firm pack. The trail up to the Wright junction had only one blowdown and a couple of icy spots...

    Armstrong (1-27-08)

Trail Conditions: Hiked up via the Beaver Meadow trail. Beaver Meadow Falls was AWESOME! Lots of thick deep blue ice with water running behind it. The trail up the side of the falls is steep and a little sloppy. The ladder was partly buried and took careful negotiation. Above that the trail...

    Giant, Rocky Peak (1-26-08)

Trail Condition: Excellant! Hiked up and back from Chapel Pond. Good snow cover, hardpack, just right for snowshoes to get a good bite. Even the open slabby stuff had snow and very little ice. One spot on the way down from Giant to the Rocky Peak col was pretty icy (the spot that's always...

    Colden (from Marcy Dam) 1-19-08

Trail Conditions: Excellant! Nice hardpack all the way to the Lake Arnold junction. Softer snow from there to the summit but still in good shape and relatively easy to climb. Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes, and handwarmers:D! Comments: Cold and overcast, but still a great day...

    Wet-n-wild Big Slide

Welcome back Guinness;). So this is round 4 your working on? In spite of all the rain, I'm sorry I missed the hike. Sounds like a very different day than the last time you were up there:D! I cringed when you wrote about the brook crossings, it was in one of those I broke my elbow:eek...

    Lower Wolf Jaw 1-13-08

Trail Conditions: Took the early departure from the Lake Road so I could "redline" some more trail. The trail was is pretty bad shape. Lots of postholes, lots of water, lots of rock, etc... From the junction with the "WolfJaws" trail that comes up from the Lake Road, conditions improved...

    Tabletop 1-12-08

Trail Conditions: Superb snowshoe conditions. Good hardpack throughout the hike. Some open water spots, especially the low end of the Tabletop trail. Some blowdown from the recent winds but nothing extreme. Worst footing was in the parking lot! Took the main trail up and the ski trail down...

    Street and Nye, 1-5-08

Trail Conditions: Very nice snowshoe track for most of the way to Street. Occassional sections with deep snow where it is difficult to get a good grip. Lots of false trails heading off the main one, but with just a little bit of attention, you won't lose your way. Trail over to Nye was...

    Safety in hiking

Want to adopt me;)? I do tons of solo hiking and am always very aware of the possibility of running into a creepy person. But I've only had one really scary interaction with a creepy guy. I was hiking in the Catskills on a marked trail with my dog when a guy stepped out of the woods and he...
