Fast Pass High Speed Lane Open at I-93 Tollbooth

Except if you were behind the guy who stopped, got out, and tried to jump the barrier to go pay, because he didn't have an EZ Pass. Time to thin the herd!

    Moose family in Franconia Notch

An article in the Concord Monitor recently, had an article on the population decline. I believe it was around 7500, 5 years ago and down to about 4500 now. Ticks and warm summers (moose don't really feed above 70 degrees) leading to unhealthy moose. Ticks need to drop off into snow for them...

Mt. Clough, via Long Pond Rd. and bush whack

Karen and I basically followed what Bryan posted on the 19th. Went in about a mile on LP Rd, and then, where some rocks block an old logging rd started up in a NE direction. Very open woods. A couple of small sprucy sections and a couple of small blow down fields. Pretty easy whack. Some...

    4000 Footer Dinner Recap ~ 4/13/13

Great point Ed about Owl's Head. And that doesn't count all those that have done it and haven't finished the 48 or don't play the "list" game. Karen and I discussed the same thing you proposed. 1. Great job by the committee, and 2. The order of awards should be reversed. Those that saw Pat...

2 guys, 3 days, 4 Border Patrol encounters and 5 peaks to finish the NEHH

Congratulations Tom and Pat. Great getting a hike in with you Tom on your quest, and reading the adventures of both of you. SS (and not even a full one) is an incredible feat. Ken and Karen

    Ski/Hike Combo Trip Zealand Hut

There is, or at least was, a trail along the north side of the road that you could hike or ski. We skied it a couple of times to the hut for an overnight. It was a bit twisty, turny with lots of little ups and downs. The road is far quicker. The trail from the end of the road was an easy ski.

    Field, Willey, Tom 3/2/13

The plan was to summit Washington for our #48, but the freezing rain at Marshfield changed our minds on that attempt. Plan B was something not above treeline, so we went south to do these three. A-Z was packed to the Avalon junction. We "broke" Avalon which had about 2 inches of new snow over...

Mt. Nancy, via Nancy Pond Trail, Bushwhack

There is parking for 5-6 cars at the trailhead. Nancy Pond Trail was nicely packed out thanks to four campers we passed as they were exiting. We three and a solo behind us packed it a bit more. We used snowshoes and would suggest others do the same. The trail is not consolidated enough for...

Congratulations to the latest Grid Finishers - Earl and Sue

Congratulations Earl and Sue! We heard you were on Madison and Adams, which we were also. We looked for you but must have zigged when you zagged. While we never got the great views the weather sure was great for you to finish. Thanks for letting us join you and for sharing your mountain...

Using a Hydration Bladder in the Winter

Having used Camelbaks for many years as a mtn biker, I would say that similar to what Tim mentioned, the hose or more likely the bite valve/valve lock is more likely to break. I have watched (awesome sight) a two hundred + pound man do a high speed endo and land full on his back (Camelbak...

    Madison and Adams

My wife and I were thinking about hiking Madison and Adams this Sunday 2/10. She needs them for #46 and 47. We have been waiting for a weekend with SUN (check), and LOW WIND ( 7-10 mph! check). We weren't planning on this much new snow. If anyone out there is thinking of these peaks...

    Huntington, South Huntington

BW of both peaks. Had planned to use the stream as a path up to the col, but recent thaw and rain eliminated that option. A few scrappy sections but not bad. We did it counter clockwise (South Huntington, Huntington). Woods seemed more open on descent. Snow was consolidated so no spruce...

    Winter Day Hike Eating Strategies

Cut anything you want to eat (including Snickers) into small pieces. Cheese and pepperoni/sausage work well. Sandwich's get cut into 1/4's so I can just grab a piece as I move. I use a "small belly bag" which is like the old Marmot Wet Bag. This bag (modified fanny pack) allows me to keep...

    Jet Boil Fuel canister

Found this for the actual Jet Boil canister. Thanks for the post as I often carry a "spare" because I don't know how much is left in the one I am using. In a attempt to figure out what is left in the canisters after small trips. I started to compare weights of jetboil 100g fuel...

Someone please explain to me what this guy was doing.

Someone who works at the Obs or has a friend there who can store the bike. Ride it down the auto road later in the year, put it on a wind trainer for workouts. Just felt like carrying a bike instead of a pack and walking on railroad tracks?

    Winter Hiking & Snowshoe Advice

Saw Dave's post about the 30 day price guarantee. i just bought a fleece and it is now $20 cheaper. Went into the store and the manager allowed me to get the refund (bought online 12/31 but didn't get it until 1/4), but he said the policy is 14days. I will spend the refund there anyway as it...

Outdoor Research - customer service question

PM sent Alan. Tim, based on my years with children/students you know that most of them are far more like the gaiter toe issue we have had, and NOT VELCROING! Good luck with the "homework velcroing". :) Ken

Outdoor Research - customer service question

I called OR on the 17th of Dec. and spoke with a CR rep. He told me that the damaged items (Croc. Gaiters coming unthreaded on inside by the buckle and the velcro toe flap not "velcroing") were absolutely covered by their warranty. He said he would send a new pair right out and when they got...

    Liberty (Shortcut?)

I'm not sure of the distance down the bike path/snowmobile trail it is from Basin (3/10's?) but you should see the trail and a crossing log in this vicinity on the left. It is easy to follow from there (broken out) until it connects with the actual trail. Just keep your eyes open. I'm sure...

    Pliny Mountain 12/29/12

Parking on Ingerson Rd is very limited (we squeezed in two cars just over the bridge). The old Priscilla Brook Trail/ 4WD road has many blowdowns. We cleared a few but went over, under and around many others. Our bushwack route did the same. Woods are very open. If you need to get Pliny the...
