Winter in the Northern Whites today 11/30

Carla, We are doing Vose Spur tomorrow. As of 4pm when I called SRR is open with no plans to close it tonight. We will assume it will be open, though like you not sure if my Camry will make it. One of us has 4wd so maybe a shuttle. Hope to meet you on CNT.

    women's winter hiking boot suggestions

My wife would second Maddy's vote for the Garmont Momentum. She is wearing them (not visible :)) on Bondcliff in our Avatar. She can't say enough about how comfortable they are and very light. I believe any of the boots discussed in this thread are ok with AMC.

Hale, South Hale via Hale Brook, Lend a Hand, Bushwhack, Zealand Trails

All trails had ice on them. We were able to easily avoid it, but some may be more comfortable with light traction. Poles helped with the stream crossings as the rocks were icy. The BW to South Hale went smoothly. We went in at the bog area on L a H. Woods were mostly open and found easy...

5/6 of the Six Pack and NEHH Finish

Thanks Tim. All the info made it pretty easy to get the peaks. We'll need to go do an Elephant/East Kennebago weekend sometime. Yeah, Winter is coming! We would love to get out again with you. Karen has 3 winter peaks (Madison, Adams and Washington) and I have 1 (Washington). Hoping to finish...

5/6 of the Six Pack and NEHH Finish

Karen and I headed up to Maine, Friday night to do 5/6 of the "six pack" with our great friend StePHen. Arriving in Stratton we reviewed all our information, as we had DETAILED routes and notes from Beth (Damselfly, Steve's wife), as well as Tim (bikehikeskifish) and Bryan's trip reports...

    Hundred Highest Finish!

Congratulations. We did that loop a month ago to finish our NE67 and add to the NEHH list. It was an incredible loop hike and hope to do it again soon. We met a local hiker who called it the "iron loop". Anyone know why? Wasn't sure if it was "tough", or there was iron ore somewhere at one...

    Earthquake?

Shook us good (Canterbury). Epicenter was SSW of Arrowhead Lake in Maine.

Bigelows (Avery, West Peak, South Horn, North Horn

Road (Stratton Brook Pond) is in good shape. Most park at the mtn bike trail junction (could hold quite a few cars but was empty on Sunday), but you can with clearance get all the way down to the brook crossing which saves a bit over a half mile. The crossing is very easy right now with lots...

AT in a single calendar winter

We discussed this idea while chatting during our section hikes of NH AT. I would think you would have to either have absolutely perfect weather, a crew busting trail, or most reasonably do it by hiking sections as the weather allowed, so would take more than a calendar year. No matter how your...

Route for Isolation - Glen Boulder or Rocky Branch?

If it's a bluebird day up Glen Boulder to Davis Path is well worth the extra elevation. We came out RB and hitched back. (Hitchhiking note: If you can't get a ride from someone in the RB parking lot it is tough to get a ride on 16. Cars are coming around a corner and going 50+.) Only time...

    Mt. Israel

Via Wentworth Trail. Trail is dry and in good condition. No blowdowns. Water at the lower sections but none from about half way up so carry some for your dog. Views into the Sandwich Range Wilderness were great. Some of the 52 WAV need updating (no good views) but not this one. Plenty of...

Coe, Brothers, Fort Loop, Baxter Park, Maine, 8/13/2012

Great report as usual Earl. We did the same hike about a week ago with Beth (Damselfly) and Steve. Started out on the Mt. Coe trail and Karen slipped and hit her head. First a nice lump then a great shiner. Did not make her really want to do the slide but we did. All your info on the trail...

    NE Cannonball

8/16/12 Took Lonesome Lake Trail up and down with the short push up Kinsman Ridge Trail. Lonesome Lake Trail is eroded in spots but there are other areas where trail work has it in good condition. Kinsman Ridge is in good shape but could be brushed back a bit. Weather was good for ALMOST the...

    Ktaadn

I cannot comment on all the trails, but having been there last week these are my thoughts. The hike up to Chimney Pond is 3.3 miles and similar to going up to Tuckermans. We went up Saddle which is steep and a slide at the top but a fairly easy climb. The Tablelands to Baxter peak were...

    4-Day Grafton Loop Backpack

As the FoD's (Friends of Damselfly) who are joining them on this hike, thanks for the TR. I was getting ready to put out a thread on questions about the water supplies and possible routes/directions. Another question I was going to post was, did the pads fill up at any of the tentsites and how...

Pilot/Pliny Range, plus Unknown Pond tentsite questions

Agree with all that is said. We did Cabot, Bulge, Horn as a clockwise loop coming out UPT. At the time we were doing the 48 and 52WAV. We are going back to do the Weeks and Terrace (NHHH) because there are always other lists :). You would get these if you do the ridge. Still two days and...

Which of these remaining seven 4000 footers is the easiest ?

I'd agree with Skip given your parameters. No real use of shoulders to do Cabot. Garfield is a relatively easy 10 miles but she may need a small push up the last pitch with a bad shoulder. North Twin also is a hike that would not involve shoulders. Owls head is a flat walk (long one) and she...

New F&G Brainstorm - Charge EVERYBODY.

So if I understand this correctly (no sure feat), than by buying "hiking insurance" in the form of a hunting or fishing license I am good to go anywhere in NH without having to worry about being charged (minus the cost of the license) for a rescue? Would the license also prevent me from being...

    Franconia Ridge Research experiment?

When my wife and I were doing that part of the AT in NH last summer we met the woman doing the research, and her husband coming up from Liberty Springs Campsite which was their base. We talked with her for quite a while and learned much about the alpine flowers on the ridge. She was about 8...
