    The Positives of Winter Hiking

I agree with all the reasons already stated plus.... "Butt sliding" (really hurts in the summer!) and snowshoe skiing downhill. Awesome shapes that the snow forms on the trees. Bright blue sky. Views you can't get in the summer.

Surviving Tom, Field, and Willey, 2/12/2011

Hi Earl, We did Tom, Field and Willey today with a great group of people. Conditions were much better than you had. Awesome views from Tom with clear skies and then good views from the trail from Field to Willey and from the Willey overlook. Thanks to you and Sue's hard work we were able to...

    Frazil Ice in NH?

I've only seen it in "manmade" locations like Nartreb said, around drains or even when I've moved slush in the spring. Forestgnome, it would be great if you remember where as then I could let my friend know...which is how this got started. Nature is very cool!

    East Osceola, Osceola

Greeley Pond Trail had about 5 inches of new snow. Mt. Osceola Trail was very drifted in as we hit the steeps on East all the way to Osceola. Lot's of work to ascend. The chimney and bypass were both very drifted but the bypass is now doable. 4 of us on snowshoes have it all broken. Much of...

    Frazil Ice in NH?

I received this video from a friend. After sending it along to some others, one replied asking if I had seen it in NH rivers/stream? I have not but was wondering if any of you have seen something similar in NH? What river or stream and what time of year (late April, early May)? Thanks, Ken...

Why is the number '19' posted on many trees on the Avalon trail?

Going along with the theory of J&J there was an bird count in Dec. http://vftt.org/forums/showthread.php?t=37434&highlight=bird+count

Wildcat A and D via 19MB and Wildcat Ridge Trail. 1/15/11

19MB was well packed though probably not enough to be barebooted. We used MSR's the entire day until we descended Polecat with microspikes. Wildcat Ridge Trail is broken to A. At about 3900' the trail takes a sharp left but it also goes right. The left is correct. We put some branches to...

    Oak Hill, Concord area

A great place for full moon hikes. Also in the summer you can climb the tower and watch fireworks from various towns. A great place to mtn bike also.

    Hancocks

Cedar Brook has a few frozen postholes which with the 2" of new snow on top are potential ankle busters. We ascended South Hancock and MSR's worked perfectly. One in microspikes had a harder time. Some icy spots on trail. The ridgewalk had some deeper drifts and postholes. The descent off...

Carter Dome via Carter Moriah 12/30/10

As a side trip for a night stay at Carter Notch Hut, we went up to Carter Dome. As previously stated in many reports 19MB is "paved" although it was getting some postholes today (12/31) as we came out, with the warm temperatures. Many of the small brooks were also opened today. The Carter...

    Duct Tape Anti-Bot Plates?

I have tried a similar method to the one Natreb posted and used zip ties. Haven't tried them yet so they may or may not work. On another note I don't believe you will not need crampons to do Carter Dome from either direction. 19MB trail is packed and could be walked without traction. Lots of...

    Remagnitzing and repolarizing compasses ?

Didn't check out the internet info, but, magnets can usually be "remagnitized" using a strong magnet. I periodically remagnitize student magnets with a powerful AlNiCo magnet. Some of the new Neodymium magnets are fairly easy to find and are strong! Basically you are realigning the domains so...

closed cell booties insulate light weight footwear for snowshoeing

My winter cycling booties look very similar (though not as thick), and they work fine mtn biking in winter. However, they do not work if you are not generating body heat (moving), so I would worry if something happened while hiking and you needed to wait, or were only able to move slowly. Then...

    Belknap Traverse (one way)

Took the Red Trail up Belknap. The Boulder Trail off the top was tricky with just a very thin layer of ice on the ledges down. Trail to Round Pond was fine as were all other trails except for the leaves which were slippery and hid the rocks and holes. From Round Pond went up Klem, then over...

    MSR HyperFlow Microfilter

I have the filter and for the two times I have used it it worked fine. The reviews are a bit manic...either great or sucks! Backpacker a year or so ago really liked it. I have never owned another so no real comparisons to offer. It worked very fast at filling the bottles.

    Winter mountaineering boot confusion

I have a pair of North Face boots that are very similar to the Cabela's just mentioned. Most of the people I hiked with last winter in the AMC Winter Hiking Series and then on my own after, used boots similar to these. The instructors used double boots. No one had any issues, although last...

    NH earthquake last Saturday night

I live in Canterbury on the SW corner closest to the epicenter which was under the Merrimack (about 2 miles down) on the Canterbury/Boscawen line. I certainly felt it as I was up watching the football game. My wife shot out of bed from a deep sleep and my son, who had never experienced one...

    Owl's Head 9/19/10

Did Owl's Head for #48 on Sunday 9/19/10. Lincoln Woods to Black Pond Trail was as always. Black Pond Trail had some muddy spots but easily avoided. The bushwhack was dry. Lincoln Brook Trail was muddy in spots but easy to avoid. Water crossing was rock hoppable. The slide was easier than...

    Owl's Head for #48 9/19/10

On Sunday the 19th my wife Karen and I set out for what should have happened about a year ago, which was to finish the 48. With a delay due to a broken foot (Karen's) we set our sights on this summer. We had a great time doing the last 10 and had planned on Isolation and Owl's Head as our last...

Isolation- Via up and down route 9/11/10

Isolation for #47 up Glen Boulder to Davis Path. Isolation Trail to Rocky Branch. GB and Top of DP were awesome. Spectacular views and mild conditions. Descending DP was also in good shape. Lots of mud and water on Isolation and Rocky Branch but most was easily avoidable. Water crossings...
