Book on NE hiking being written - author looks for contributors

I met Carol White on Ike about 10 years ago and have had a few correspondences since about hiking, writing, etc. She was working on the ADKs book then. She seems like a very solid, nice, knowledgeable person. I wouldn't hesitate to work with her. And, in case you haven't done this sort of thing...

    Pemi Wilderness Bridge Removal Project

The bridge--gone, in what must be record time for a government project. From the WMNF website: "The Pemigewasset Wilderness Bridge removal and trail project has been completed. Hikers are advised that advance route planning is essential. If you are starting your hike at Lincoln Woods, be sure...

    Mildred the Moose

If you've been following the fortunes of Mildred the yearling moose who joined a herd of bovine cows over at the Minot farm in Bath and gave lots of locals incredible photo ops all summer--she's gone, presumably with her new boyfriend...

    It's heerrre . . . maybe

Mahoosucs were snow-covered (trees) at 3000' and above; Gorham Heights and Randolph still had .5-1" valley snow late this afternoon; Northern Prezzies visible under 3000', snow-coated; cloud cover too low everywhere else to see the snow line.

    The Pemi Wilderness--Some History

Interesting. I should also be looking at Carrigain descriptions along with those of the Pemi. Thanks.

Snow on the summits today (9/30)?

Valley temp in Franconia is 43F, light rain, low clouds, and the scuttlebutt around town is that it's snowing on Cannon. We'll see when it clears....

    The Pemi Wilderness--Some History

What follows are provisional thoughts about what the Pemi has meant to the history of ideas about the White Mountains. Please feel free to comment, criticize, refine, refute. I haven’t decided whether I’m being too hard on J. E. Henry, demonizing him excessively. After all, we walk on some...

    Carrigain

Here's a recent "trip report" by my favorite contemporary White Mountain writer: http://www.winnisquamecho.net/Articles-c-2009-09-23-149566.113119_Climbing_the_mighty_Carrigain.html

    The arrival of hunting season

I wasn't too happy to see a Northern NH Guides truck with a payload of apples in the back pull off near a favorite forest road trail of mine in the Franconia area this morning. Several guys in camo jumped out of the cab. Yes, bear baiting season is on. Of the 27 states that allow bear hunting...

    Baldface circle, water?

My first hike of the circle was the most parched trip I can remember. After that I carried extra water. Despite the monsoon summer, it's been dry the last several weeks here.

Great pictures! I won't tell either. Except to say that it's not Buffalo NY.

    The Pemi Wilderness--Some History

Ed Clark Ed Clark (85), a founder of Clark's Trading Post and the White Mountain Central Railroad, died yesterday. He was a mechanical genius with a passion for rescuing and restoring steam engines of all kinds, including early locomotives and log loaders. The final resting home of one (or...

    The Pemi Wilderness--Some History

The controversy over the suspension bridge has sent me to the maps I have of the Pemi, then to any written sources I could find ready to hand. The area is rich with history, and with hiking history, and I am not aware of any book that charts that history fully. This thread is not intended to be...

    Pemi Wilderness Bridge Removal Project

I'm assuming that the short new section of trail will make a more direct connection between the ES Tr and Cedar Brook Tr, rather than directing traffic to the bank where the bridge was and then away from it to Cedar Brook.

NHF&G News: Possible Mountain Lion Sighting in New Hampshire

I saw one at close-range in a car for about 30 seconds in Atlantic Canada last year. It was running alongside the car. They are hard to mistake. The size and long rope-like tail immediately rules out the smaller and tail-less bobcat, and the tail swinging back and forth rules out the coyote...

Good route to kinsman pond with a dog

That would be Rowdy, who often went up Kinsman, over, and down into the Notch, and would get a car ride home from those familiar with his route. Or he'd hike back up and over to home on his own.
