    Ok, I'll do it... BIG SNOW STORM(s) 2/17, 2/19!

No new snow at 1200' here and no new snow visible up to 4500' on west side of FN. There will not be bare ground at higher elevation, of course.

    Ok, I'll do it... BIG SNOW STORM(s) 2/17, 2/19!

Bummer. WWW!!! Wind, water, warm. 50+ mph wind gusts last night, trees down, power out, heavy rain, swollen streams. Ground in the open is bare at 1200' in Franconia. No sign of new snow as high as about 4500' on the west side of Franconia Notch.

    Go Bode!

What Gris said. I'm glad to see that Miller has learned how to handle the press. They can go after Lago now. Except he's voluntarily back in NH.

Finally A Snowstorm On the Way

Light flurries with negligible accumulation in Franconia.

Finally A Snowstorm On the Way

Well, that's a relief to hear. I've been reduced to shoveling snow into the dog's outdoor pen. Just like Vancouver. If you're a dog owner, you know why. Otherwise, you don't want to know.

Stephen Huneck, Artist of Dogs, Dies at 61

Dog Mountain is wonderful and, as you might expect, it is totally dog-friendly. Its 400 acre mountain-top location has been a good place to take a puppy for some early training walks and socializing. I hope it survives. From Huneck's comments on the website, http://www.dogmt.com/chapel.php...

    SNow or lack thereof 1_26_10

Picked up 3-4" in intense whiteout squalls beween 6-7 p.m. Ground is nicely covered again. Moon is out. Above 2000' probably got a good shot of snow.

    SNow or lack thereof 1_26_10

Snowing now, bare spots in the open almost covered, more on the way tomorrow. Streams still wide open and running high. Friday's single digit temps should slow down the runoff, but they won't have rebuilt reliable natural bridges by this weekend.

New world record recorded wind speed

Cara Rudio, marketing and communications director for MWO, explains the time lapse: " One question that seems to be on everyone's mind is: 'why the heck did this take 14 years to figure out??' The quick answer is that it didn't: the record has been there all along. It was recorded by the...

    SNow or lack thereof 1_26_10

Franconia @ 1200': bare patches in unsheltered areas; 8-10 inches in the shade/woods; the snowshoe track I packed out locally survived fine. It won't take much to revive winter conditions. Biggest problem right now is open streams and rivers that are still disgorging the runoff.

Hiker OK After Getting Stuck On Mount Moosilauke

Uh oh. But if he's up here in NH, it's been a wild and wooly day with 50 mph winds, rain sidewise, etc. Power coming and going, hence, internet coming and going. Mainly going in the western Whites. (Don't plan on crossing unbridged rivers of streams tomorrow.)

Hiker OK After Getting Stuck On Mount Moosilauke

Easy, Tim, Easy. Stand down. ;) The question that Ed Poyer raised about condensation was a good one, and the BSB comment posted above on condensation control is also good to know.

Hiker OK After Getting Stuck On Mount Moosilauke

The condensation problem is discussed elsewhere on the site, as follows: "Do you get condensation inside Reflexcell™ products? Not normally. This is because the warmth of the material suppresses the formation of condensation, and the perforations in the inner and middle layers allow much of the...

Hiker OK After Getting Stuck On Mount Moosilauke

Yes, might work. Somebody ought to crack one of these BSB's open and field test it, or ask the mfgr for field test results. A forced overnight bivy is not a good time for surprises. In the field review and testimonial on the BSB website, the user's clothing is already wet and they're being...

Hiker OK After Getting Stuck On Mount Moosilauke

I have a BSB, never had to use it, never opened it up to try it, just carry it in winter even on local walks in the woods when there's no cell coverage, which is usual. That, an old blue ensolite pad, and chemical warmers is a very lightweight wait-it-out kit for winter. Has anyone had actual...

    Cannon?

If you go up soon, regardless of route, count on at least another foot of snow that's come down yesterday and today--and it's still snowing in Franconia.
