    Lonesome Lake

Kids will love swimming in LL; adults will find it cold but bearable in high summer. There's usually a couple of rowboats on the lake too.

Hiker OK After Getting Stuck On Mount Moosilauke

Thanks for sharing the lessons of your experience, Rick, and glad all turned out well. I read in the article about the woman who broke the snowshoe on Moosilauke last week and used the SPOT to activate her rescue that cell coverage is spotty at best on Moosilauke as well. Any idea why the GPS...

    Kinsmans

40*F in Franconia today with snow turning to cream cheese. You'll do best in a 4WD or AWD to get up the slight incline to the newish unplowed Kinsman parking area on 116. I made it OK in AWD. 2WD vehicles, including a Prius, had parked on the shoulder of 116 with half the car on the road to...

    Kinsmans

I bw'd in that area today in the 2000-3000' range and nothing was coming down. It didn't get much above 34, little wind, and no sun.

    Trailhead for N. Kinsman

Nah. Perfectly harmless. I know where you went wrong now. You failed to make a right before the "frig" turn. The old logging road you stayed on was much more distinct then than it is now so it is unlikely anyone would mistakenly follow it again.

    Kinsmans

That would be 2/10 mile SOUTH of the old trailhead, on the south side of the Tamarack Tennis Camp with the big red barn.

How to make skiis less slippery

Ditto skins or even some x-country ski wax appropriate for snow cdx. As for keeping the skis from moving laterally and backwards, you might give this newish Franconia group a call and see if they have any technical suggestions: http://www.adaptivesportspartners.org/

    Why I love REI

The closest REI to Franconia NH 03580 is 117.8 miles. That's bad--and good. Put it in N. Conway. http://www.rei.com/map/store

    Why I love REI

Those catalogs were great. I bought my first external frame backpack and a 60/40 parka from REI in the '70's. Should have kept the parka--4 bids on Ebay right now for one much like it in auction ending in 90 minutes. The vintage market isn't lucrative but it's certainly active...

Wright Trail/Goose Eye Mountain - Winter beta please!

I haven't hiked the Wright Tr since June 1995, when it was new, so this is an archive post, not current info. My personal TR notes say that we found the new trail without too much problem. The first part is gradual and follows Goose Eye Brook with gorges and beautiful waterfalls. Then the first...

    Trailhead for N. Kinsman

The trailhead for SK from the W side, the Reel Brook TH, is accessed from Rt. 116 approximately 3 m. north of the 116-112 junction. There's a brown hiker logo sign on the W side of 116 there, then a dirt road of a mile or so, then the trailhead. Re getting lost on NK 20 years ago, you probably...

    It's not funny

Comparison of indoor vs outdoor temperatures of huts in the winter

Do jumping jacks before you zip into the sleeping bag, eat adequate calories, put a hot (or warm) bottle of water in the bag, zip it up tight and hope you don't have to get out too soon. You can use chemical heat packs too as long as they are insulated from direct contact with your body...

    Hiker Rescued from Mt Moosilauke

Shoot, McRat, I was just about to respond to your first post that you shouldn't be worried about the men in the black coats after you but to watch out for the *people* in the white coats who are looking for you, but you've ruined it now, i.e., I agree with Audrey.

    Whites - Lonesome Lake

Call them anyway. They may have a wait list. You're not canceling altogether, just shortening your stay....Or see if there's a VFTT'er who wants to take your place.

    Whites - Lonesome Lake

You're right, ALG-Bob, it probably will be difficult to dry a lot of wet clothing if you don't want to sleep with it. The separate, smaller bunk houses are nice in the respect that they are quieter, but they are detached from the kitchen quarters, which is where some heat is generated from the...

Potential New Year's blizzard to blanket New England mountains

Heavy snow showers this afternoon; it's never over 'til it's over.

Potential New Year's blizzard to blanket New England mountains

Still snowing on the west side of the Franconias . . .yawn . . .but I swore of the snow blower for this 2010 and am getting a good workout with the shovel.

Potential New Year's blizzard to blanket New England mountains

Likewise in Franconia @1200'. I'm guessing 16-18" since Saturday morning, and it's still coming down steadily on the west side of the Franconias. Light fluffy snow, should be easy to clear and fun to play in. Cannon reports 22" in the last 24 hours, 25" in the last 3 days.

Potential New Year's blizzard to blanket New England mountains

Yup, heavy snow is blowing horizontally.
