Potential New Year's blizzard to blanket New England mountains

This storm(s) is very very confusing, lets take it on part at a time. The first batch is coming through today with light snow for southern areas, then from now till Saturday, periods of light snow develop everywhere, this is part of multiple troughs and lows trying to get their act together. On...

Potential New Year's blizzard to blanket New England mountains

New models have shifted, I have much lower confidence of as big of a storm. They are trying to separate into two long duration light to moderate snow events that could still drop over a foot in places.

Potential New Year's blizzard to blanket New England mountains

I was actually going to start this, but there is so much uncertainty that I was going to wait. This storm bears watching, really. Some of the models are stalling the storm as it bombs into the Gulf of Maine and actually retrograding it back into New England! That means, snow starts Thursday...

A Real Corker Coming This Week?

A very windblown compacted 10 inches in Enfield, NH. Hard to measure so I had to find a spot that was out of the wind. Good storm thought. -Mattl

A Real Corker Coming This Week?

Shadowing= Moisture is wrung out over a mountain area by rising air and on the opposite side the air descends, warming, and drying it. With a storm having a south to south-east wind some areas can get majorly robbed like Whitefield, NH, CT River valley and Northeast VT. -Mattl

A Real Corker Coming This Week?

So the models have beefed up the storm and trended somewhat colder with it. There won't be as much sleet now, but still some. The storm will run into the block of cold we have overhead and a secondary low will develop off the coast, how strong the low is will mean more or less snow. With that...

A Real Corker Coming This Week?

Well.. Yes it is a big storm, but there are issues with it. First, models are having trouble figuring out which low they want to be the primary low since it will have several centers. Right now they are favoring the western low over the Great lakes which is bad, it would mean snow to sleet and...

    Crawford Path, Mount Pierce 11/29/2009

Snow increased from a compacted/settled 10 inches at the bottom, to 26 inches measured at several locations around 4000 feet. There was a fair amount of open water, and a small amount of ice, but lots of downed trees. The AMC will need to do some serious work up here and all over the northern...

Pattern Change Snow Storm on the Way

I just got back from a hike up Pierce, where at 4000 feet roughly, I measured 24-26 inches of new snow, and this is after it has settled and been wind blown. Incredible hike. ps: in your face Jay P ;)

    Mt Clinton Rd conditions 11/28/2009

I checked the road status and it says it's open, but I am wondering since they received over 10 inches of snow if A)they actually plow it before it closes, B) If anyone knows what condition it is in right now. I wanted to use it tomorrow and hoped to get feedback. Thanks! -Mattl

Pattern Change Snow Storm on the Way

18.5 inches so far on Mount Washington, and 18 at Bretton Woods. It will continue to snow today, so add on a few more inches before it's done.

Pattern Change Snow Storm on the Way

Nice Pic! Randolf, NH just came in with 10 inches and Crawford Notch, and Mount Washington has reported almost 2 inches of melted, so 15 or more inches. Impressive. -Mattl

Planning an above-treeline hike Saturday 11/28? Be careful...

Good information to know. I just know someone will hike in the Whites this weekend and have no idea there was supposed to be snow, not on this board of course ;) -Mattl

Pattern Change Snow Storm on the Way

Winter Weather advisories are in place which mostly pertain to where people live. So an update, storm looks on track and is going to deepen into quite an impressive little storm, those who follow this stuff, 972 or 976 low over the Gulf of Maine by this evening. As of 9:34 am this morning...

Pattern Change Snow Storm on the Way

Since we have had such a dull and mild November in the Whites for weather, the upcoming weather system will be one to watch since it may catch some off guard. Tonight a storm system will develop in response to a pattern shift for the weather in North America. Cold air that has been sitting over...

    North America's Deadliest Animal

Not as much in the US, but in Canada and Alaska, Moose can be very dangerous in rut as many know. I don't have the numbers but I thought it was one of the highest injuries/deaths. -Mattl

an uplifting experience in the Sandwich Range forest

Great post, very much enjoyed it. I know how sad it must be to not see some moose you see over and over, and wonder if they died or were shot. Do you think the bull could have done anything if you snapped the picture? -Mattl

Do helicopters ever find lost hikers in NH?

I suspect that helicopters are standard rescue practice in most of the US, but because of the thick forest cover in the Whites, it makes it difficult here. I can see how using it above treeline or along large rivers like the East Branch, but other then that I think it can be a waste of money...
