    Mount Cabot Trail

Roy Sweickler is right Our federal tax money paid for this easement and the relevant federal organization, the USFS, lacks the resolve to enforce it. The person I most disagree with on this thread is the one who said we should "respect" the USFS. Cowardice and or negligence is never deserving...

    Another big New England Storm?

Cold rain in mid-PA Since your storm is supposed to book through here, near Trenton NJ, it's 48 degrees, dry and damp. But two hours away, in Lancaster, PA, it's raining and 34 degrees. It'll be snow after dark. It's supposed to cool off here and give us snow Friday, possibly turning to rain...

    Waiting on 48...

Great TR, McRat That was easily the most captivating post in the history of VFTT, which says a lot considering Tom and Atticus posts here.

    Monastery on Equinox

What a life Some people sure live interesting lives. He was involved in the development of the most destructive weapons used in WWI and WWII, mustard gas and the atomic bomb. Then he headed Union Carbide. I checked to see what responsibility he might have had for the 1984 Bhopal disaster but...

Search under way as 3 fall from Mt. Hood

Mt. Hood economy I haven't been there in over 20 years but I would say the tourism percentage of the local economy in the south and east areas adjacent to the mountain is very, very high. Without people playing on their mountain, including outsiders, there wouldn't be very much money there.

    GPS off by 36 feet

Honing in Thanks, DougPaul. Good to see you back on the beat. I'm thinking that if I'm sitting at the stop sign at Vermillion Drive and Trenton Rd. and my GPS says I'm 36 feet from the intersection of those streets, well, where is the actual intersection? Not likely at the stop sign but at the...

Doug Paul injured in a back-country ski accident

We're all indebted to Andy, Keith, Tim and the rescuers. The part about the snowmobilers tipping over illustrates the dangers of winter backcountry rescue operations. From past exchanges I know DougPaul prefers to answer scientific questions on the forum as opposed to private messaging...

    GPS off by 36 feet

"Here" means two things, Sardog I can plan a route by inputting the address where I start and inputting the address where I'm going and that will give me a route. Or, I can just input where I want to go and "start" is understood as "here," where ever I am. I was sitting on my couch when I...

    GPS off by 36 feet

I don't want to hijack the Lost Franconia Hiker thread further but when I posted that my GPS is usually off by 36 feet, I got two responses. It's a brand-new Lowrance i350c. I was wondering if the problem arose because I inputted my home location from my living room rather than the street in...

    MA and RI Firetower Sites

The cliff with the view was northeast of the cabins. I looked on a map and I think it's called Tippling Rock. Mapquest shows a Richard Callahan State Park on the south border of Nobscot. There used to be a working pig farm on the south side and the Scouts would go in the pens and chase and...

    MA and RI Firetower Sites

Nobscot memories Is there still a boy-scout camp at Nobscot? We were all over those woods and the tower was always one of the big objectives. There was also an East-facing cliff with view of Boston. That was back when the smaller John Hancock Building was the tallest building in Boston.

    MA and RI Firetower Sites

Mt. Plantain According to the Mass. site, the old Mt. Everett tower was purchased with the intent of being reconstructed on Mt. Plantain. Does anyone know how those plans are progressing? I did not know there are areas of scrub oak and pitch pine on Mt. Plantain.

Proposal to have NY section of VFTT?

Do it Peakbagr has been a great moderator and has discussed this fully with Darren. They see a need. Others note a decline in NY postings and Neil says he doesn't post TR here anymore. With inclusion, I've read about great ADK destinations and spent time this summer kayaking near Saranac Lake...

Lost Hiker on Mt Lafayette - FOUND!

Not the pier, the shore I wouldn't have driven off the pier, I would driven into the water next to the pier because my GPS always seems to be 36 feet off!

    How non-hikers look at hikers

Click and Clack The Tappet Brothers had this discussion a couple of years ago. One talked the other into a hike. What's that tree? Oak. What's that tree? Hemlock. What's that tree? Birch. What's that tree? Beech. What's that tree? Oak. So, we're repeating what we've seen, let's turn back. His...

? on hikes near Los Angles

San Gabriel Peak and Mount Disappointment There's a trail from the Angeles Crest Hwy. to San Gabriel Peak and Mount Disappointment that is about seven miles round trip and four hours long. There's a great view of Los Angeles, Pasadena, Arcadia, etc., when the air is clear. San Gabriel Peak is...
