Abol Trail to Baxter Peak will open May 21st.

Unusual news from Baxter, announcing in advance a spring season Katahdin trail opening. Camping season was postponed from the regular 5/15 to 5/21. There are open sites at Abol Campground, if you feel like calling in sick for a pre-blackfly trip.

    Leadership Change at Baxter Park

Many thanks to Jensen for his hard work and dedication to the donor's intent. Only thing I object to is this 'nationwide' search. Would much rather have someone who already knows how to pronounce Nesowadnehunk, Helon, and Wassataquoit.

Did you ever spend an unplanned night in the woods?

I always have enough with me to stay out overnight if need be. I've stayed out because I had to 3 times, and have stayed out because I was having unplanned fun dozens of times.

    Katahdin bushwhack regs

To the OP: You must park in established parking lots, and as mentioned 'whacking doesn't get around daily limits. All off trail plans should be reported to, and discussed with, park personnel. I've bushwhacked quite a bit, fade-blazed trails, Rum Mt, Avalanche Brook, Center Mt, around...

    BSP Labor day 2017

I'd wager that gas station (good pizza) is in the loop - they just oppose the NM. The road to the Katahdin Loop is just across the street from them. You'll find the same attitude in some businesses in Patton. Map.

The more arduous the journey, the stronger the prayer

Katahdin Stream Campground at Baxter is set aside for the Penobscot gathering every Labor Day weekend. All sites and parking are taken, but AT Thru-hikers passing thru the campground are often welcomed (and fed) as fellow pilgrims. The gathering isn't an open to the public 'pow-wow' put on as...

Katahdin Stream Bridge in Baxter being replaced, out til Sept. 1st.

Baxter released this statement the other day via Facebook: "Replacement of the hiking bridge across Katahdin Stream on the AT is now underway. This crossing will be a wet one starting Monday, July 31. We hope the new bridge will be in place by September 1." This is not the bridge up by Katahdin...

No, pet dogs are not allowed in Baxter State Park.

Baxter is a Wildlife Preserve. You think you can just talk your way around "no pets"? No one "cajoles" Baxter into dropping the "no pets" rule.

No, pet dogs are not allowed in Baxter State Park.

Claiming there is some negotiation, some interview process to apply for, some special exception to be granted, is misinformation. Service dogs are allowed. Pets are not.

No, pet dogs are not allowed in Baxter State Park.

Again, there is no "interview process" to "apply" for. No amount of "begging" will change policy. Service dogs are allowed. Pets are not.
  14. TJ aka Teej

No, pet dogs are not allowed in Baxter State Park.

No 'interview process', no 'tenacity', no 'applying' for 'special exception,' needed for service dogs to enter Baxter. Service dogs are allowed. Pets are not.

No, pet dogs are not allowed in Baxter State Park.

Just want to clear something up regarding recent social media posts and photos of a hiker and her dog on Baxter Peak. Only service dogs are allowed in the Park, There is no "interview process," no "applying", no "special exception," no "legitimate reason." Either the dog is a service animal, or...

Man falls 1000 feet to his death on Katahdin's Abol Slide.

Terrible news. "MILLINOCKET, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A Holden man is dead after falling down an icy surface in Baxter State Park Saturday, park officials say. They say the 68-year-old was camping at Daicey Pond Campground with a larger group, and was attempting to climb Katahdin on the Abol...
