I suggest Roaring Brook Campground for a base camp with some fun hikes. You can hike out to Sandy Stream Pond for a great look up at Katahdin across the pond and then possibly continue up South Turner Mt. If you don't go all the way up to the 360 summit, there's an open area short of the summit...

Up and over DoubleTop, north to south, with a car drop. The Owl, neglected with a spectacular summit. Traveler Loop. South Branch is a gem, stay at the walk-in sites, bring your kayaks or canoe.

I've seen pics of tents set up on ledge - are there regular tent pads too? I was planning on dayhiking the loop, but now can fit in an overnight.

The NEOC cam is just north of the Painted Rock on your way into Baxter. I bet Katahdin Stream, Abol, and South Branch will be open on the 15th, along with the cabin campgrounds at Daicey and Kidney Pond. The tote road will probably be gated north of Foster Field. Don't know about the Roaring...

Sharing gorp with the Whiskey Jacks is a guilty backwoods pleasure. Yeah, it ain't LNT etc etc, but they don't seem to mind. You'll find them where humans have lunch, the birds know our habits.

If you have a campsite, you don't need a dupr. Weekdays in September are a great time to camp, after the dayhikers leave even popular campgrounds like Abol and Katahdin Stream are near empty.
