    Yellowstone / Tetons

Our pictures are here if you're interested. :) We enjoyed our backpack to Heart Lake.... it was a fairly easy trek terrain-wise, but very hot when we went (mid-July) so it was rougher than I expected it to be. If you stay another night (or are a lot faster than we are,) you can also hike Mt...

    Best Photo Album Websites

I'll also agree with the phanfare comments. They have a great product, but their attitude toward their customers is awful. I would not pay them money... they have demonstrated that they will make wholesale changes to their business model and you'll be stuck with it. They react very badly to...

Pico Peak via Sherburne Trail 12/21/09

Trail conditions: Sherburne Trail is a bit bumpy, but barebootable to the first ski trail crossing. From there you will want snowshoes to the summit. We broke out from the ski trail crossing to Pico Camp (mostly, there was a bit that had a single track that headed upwards partway) and then up to...

Monadnock via Old Toll Road and Arrow Trail 11/28

Trail conditions:Old Toll Road was dry and easy. There is a tree that fell and tugged down a powerline. Another hiker said he saw it arc... we just went off trail to give it a wide berth. Arrow Trail was wet and muddy until about halfway up, then changed to light snow and running water. About...

    Jackson via Webster-Jackson 11/8

Trails used: Webster-Jackson Trail conditions: Little bit of mud here and there, but nothing too terrible. Last mile up to the summit of Jackson had patchy (and thick) ice along the trail. Light traction would have helped make the going a little easier, but I managed to bareboot with care...

    Finding the Falling Water's Trailhead

You won't have any trouble. Giant trailhead parking sign on the Franconia parkway, which will get to to the lot. From the lot, the path is paved up from the parking lot... and after passing the restrooms it splits.... right for Falling Waters, left for OBP. Can't miss it. - Ivy

    Huntington's vs Castle trails?

If you can see smugmug albums, you can take a look at my Huntington Ravine album. It's not as good as TDawg's but try this picture of the slab: Slab photo - Ivy

    Huntington's vs Castle trails?

I just hiked Huntington Ravine a couple of weeks ago... the fan portion is very similar to the Cathedral Trail on Katahdin -- just lots of big boulders you climb over. (You can avoid much of this by following the blazed trail around it, but most just went straight up on the day we hiked it.)...

    100 mile AT wilderness section

The more difficult terrain is in the southern end where you're crossing over mountains. The northern half is flatter, passing by lots of lakes and ponds. You'll have to decide for yourself whether you'd prefer to tackle the tougher southern end right away so you can cruise through the end.... or...

    Bearvault Alert - Flowed lands

Is there a place in the general vicinity that you can rent bear canisters? (We're heading in to the JBL area and then onwards from there... no maps in front of me or I'd be more specific.) I'm heading to the Adirondacks next month and was planning to bring my Bear Vault. I'm not terribly...

    Camping Outside Baxter

Hidden Springs Campground in Millinocket -- it's at most 20 minutes away from the southern entrance. Been very quiet every time I've been there. http://www.hiddenspring.com/

Missing Hiker in Northern Presidentials - Found safe

Here's the latest F&G press release: LOST TEEN HIKER FOUND SAFE IN WHITE MOUNTAINS CONCORD, N.H. - At approximately 10:35 this morning, April 28, 2009, a search team on foot found 17-year-old hiker Scott Mason of Halifax, Mass., who had been lost in New Hampshire's White Mountains since...

Chocorua via Brook and Libery trails 4/25

Trail conditions: Brook Trail in really good shape -- no snow (except for a few patchy spots) until the junction with the Bee Line Trail. After that snow, was pretty packed or already postholed so it presented no difficulties. Slabs were fine to ascend. One challenging pine tree blowdown -- will...

Do I Look Like An Idiot?

That reminded me of one of my favorite stories from a couple of years ago. I was chitchatting with a big, chiseled guy at the gym about backpacking. After I said that I take solo trips, I could tell he thought I was crazy. I figured he was getting ready for the often-asked aren't you worried...

Do I Look Like An Idiot?

Ah, unsolicited advice.... I get a lot of it. Especially in winter... but pretty much any time I hike solo. (Which is a lot, since I'm really too slow for group hikes.) I try very hard to remember that people are well-intentioned and are trying to be helpful. It becomes more difficult to...

Bridal Veil Falls via Coppermine Trail 4/4/09

Trail Conditions: Coppermine Trail ranged from very icy, to a solid snow monorail to muddy to underwater! As you'd expect the brook was running high.... but crossing near the shelter was doable (with care, be careful at the "ice shelf" at the edge of the brook, some of which broke off while I...

Kancamagus Brook Ski Trail, Old Skidder Trail, Flume Brook Trail Loop, 2/15/09

Thanks so much for posting this trip report, Jazzbo. I've had this exact trip on my radar for a while and keep putting it off. You've made me want to put it higher on the to-do list for sure. -Ivy

    A simple pulk plan

It's definitely an interesting idea. I wonder how well the loops on the pack will hold up.... I've found that the attachment point between my poles and the plastic sled tend to be a problem. I'd be worried that one of the loops on the pack might break mid-trip. - Ivy
