    Gannett Peak, Wyoming HighPoint

Wonderful to read a report about Gannett... I *so* want to do this hike sometime! Great report and pictures... congrats! - Ivy

Baxter S.P. - driving from Roaring Brook to South Branch Pond

I've driven both ways.... going around the park is definitely quicker. I think it saved us about a half hour by heading out and driving to Patten. Going along the Tote Road, it took about two hours to get from South Branch to the southern gate. For what it's worth, my preference is for the...

    White Mountain Guide Online Question

I don't have a subscription to the online guide but.... When it first launched, (I was one of their many beta testers) they calculated "elevation CHANGE" rather than "elevation GAIN." So even the downhill portions were added in to come up with a figure showing the overall elevation change for...

Cabot, Horn, Bulge, Unknown Pond Peak via Mill Brook, Kilkenny Ridge & Bunnell 8/23-4

Cabot, Horn, Bulge, Unknown Pond Peak via Mill Brook, Kilkenny Ridge & Bunnell 8/23-4 Trail conditions: Mill Brook Trail was very muddy and swampy but easy to follow. Kilkenny Ridge had muddy spots but was mostly good. One trouble spot near Kilback Pond -- three bog bridges are floating in...

Cow, calf and bull moose seen together

Wow... three moose! I saw one in the pond at the Berlin Fish Hatchery the same morning. Not sure if it's one of the three Marty saw, but here's a picture. - Ivy

    What is your "White Whale?"

It was definitely West Bond & Bond in winter... took six tries for me to finally get them (usually due to a giant cold front that rolled in right before our long-ago planned overnight trip...) We tried a variety of routes, knowing that the mileage was too high for me to comfortably head there...

50 high points in 50 states

I'm a highpointer too... it's lots of fun and we've been to many places across the country that we never would have visited otherwise. I'm at 39 right now... with a little luck I'll visit number 40 in September. :) 49 will be the highest I'll ever go though, as Denali is definitely out of...

    airplane prohibited items?

Perhaps I'm reading wrong, but if you're looking to put hiking poles in your carry on luggage they won't let you (at least in my experience.) (Sorry, can't remember the airline, I fly different ones a lot.) Don't try to convince them they _aren't_ ski poles either.... that is a losing battle...

    Online web picture sites

Phanfare has seen the light and gone back to allowing its users to have albums open to the public. I personally would not recommend them based upon my experience with them... my personal experience dealing with their customer service has been extremely negative. (I got several rude and...

    stash

When we cached food for a hike through the 100-mile Wilderness, we used bear canisters, which worked great. We placed them just off the trail, where they couldn't be seen, behind a tree and covered up a bit with brush (just to be sure no one would take them.) I left a note inside mine indicating...

    Grafton Loop Hike

Chomp: If possible could you post on conditions/ water sources upon your return? I am particularly interested in the water source at the Stewart Campsite, which someone else here described as sketchy. I'm headed out there later this month and would really appreciate any beta you can provide from...

Metacomet-Monadnock Trail: Ruggles Pond to Gulf Rd 6/22

Trail conditions: This section of the M&M is well maintained and easy to follow... we didn't have any navigation issues at all. Mosquitoes were out and a little thick in spots along Mormon Hollow Brook in particular. Bugs were mostly tolerable otherwise. Special equipment: Bug spray helpful...

    Into the Wild yet anyone?

In January, Redford announced that "A Walk in the Woods" was going to be his next project. Click here. (The above article says he'll both star and produce. Imdb lists the movie as being in pre-production, which means it may or may not happen, I guess.)

    Photobooks

I use Blurb to make photobooks of my best hiking pictures each year. The books come out really nice. So far, I've always made softcover books, but I'm going to try making a hardcover book for my 2008 pictures at the end of the year. The books come out great and seem to get a great reception...

    Great Gulf camping

The map in my White Mountain Guide (old edition... 26th, I think?) has the campsites marked. Just curious... has that been eliminated in the maps that come with the newer editions? I haven't updated. :) - Ivy

Adams via Airline & Valley Way 6/14

Trail conditions: Both trails in very good shape. Airline had patches of mud and tolerable bugs. Summit of Adams was crawling with bugs -- it was a step on the rock and run kind of deal. Valley Way was very muddy and the 1.5 miles between Madison Spring Hut and the Scar Trail was loaded with...
