    Turkeys on the ski trails

I've often seen flocks as well... both in the Whites and in southern New England. I don't think they are particularly shy either... there is a flock that lives near a local high school that definitely isn't shy. We hear calls every once in a while on the police scanner about marauding turkeys...

    RMC sign auction

Last year, at least, it was a silent auction type set up... you emailed your bid and had no idea what others were bidding. (Don't know what the final bids were because I didn't win the sign I bid on.) However, this year I suspect the signs are going to sell for a lot more since people will be...

    Keeping Score

Think of it as "winter" and "all-season" rather than three-season. So that way it makes sense as a hike in February qualifies as both a "winter" hike and an "all-season" hike. You can count it for both lists that way... at least that's my understanding of it. - Ivy

winter travel on Jewell and Ammo trails?

I had no trouble following the Ammo up in winter -- however, you will probably need crampons. The top was extremely icy and I don't think snowshoes would have been enough, at least on that particular day. We hiked Washington and Monroe as an up and back. Here's a spot where I wouldn't have been...

    No. & So. Kinsmans: Mon,10-22-07

There used to be a ladder on the Mt. Kinsman Trail but the trail was rerouted to avoid that spot a few years ago. Hiking is a great way to spend a birthday! :) Glad you had a good one, Nilsa. - Ivy

    What is Backpacking?

I usually say this to my non-hiking friends: Camping = sleeping outdoors Hiking = Heading out for a walk in the woods Backpacking = Hiking with everying you need on your back for a night (or more) of camping. - Ivy

    100 Mile Wilderness Backpacking?

No permits.... just pack up and go. Adding Katahdin will add another day or two to your trek. As someone who has hiked through the 100-Mile Wilderness, you can stay at the Birches lean-to, which is reserved for thru-hikers. If it's the height of AT thru-hiker season, you might want to consider...

    100 Mile Wilderness Backpacking?

I just wanted to note that Whitehouse Landing doesn't take mail drops anymore. I think they have some supplies in their camp store but I've heard its fairly limited. - Ivy

    100 Mile Wilderness Backpacking?

The 100-Mile Wilderness is great... though I wouldn't suggest hiking it in a hurricane. :) I didn't have much for views on my trip but it was still great hiking anyway. You probably won't need 10 days for the hike... especially if you end on Abol Bridge before hiking up Katahdin. The southern...

    Vegetarian food/snacks for hiking

I've been veggie for almost 10 years now. My lunches are mostly hummus and pita (or rye crisp bread,) peanut butter and jelly or cold burritos (filled with regular burrito fixings or rice and vegetables... often it's whatever I have on hand for leftovers.) I have made teriyaki tofu jerky in...

    Jay X 2 = 100 (9/15/07)

Thanks for having me along. I wouldn't have believed it while standing in the rain on Jay a year ago that I'd be back in even worse weather! :) It's a good thing we can all still have a grand day if we're wet and muddy. Congratulations again, Amicus! I hope your future adventures are as much...

Mt. Whitney, the Privy on High is no More!

That's funny... my editor just brought the NYT over to show me that story. He was just saying the New York Times seems to put a hiking-related story on the front page every few months and was wondering the same thing as you-- if that means there is a growth of interest in hiking. I said if my...

    owl's head info

Indeed as of yesterday, the stream crossings for Owl's Head were no trouble (though I just waded through the last one on the way out because I wanted to cool off.) Unless there is a major rain right before your trip, you should be good to go. I would also probably put Isolation ahead of Owl's...
