    I love my...

Sorel Cold Mountain boots. $55, plenty warm for a day hike in any weather and almost as comfortable as my hiking boots. Better than any pac boot I've ever worn.

    Tom,Field or moosilauke

I'll be there. Just to be sure, are we talking about Hale Brook Trail, which starts on Zealand Road 2.5 miles from 302?

    Tom,Field or moosilauke

It's your call, Darwin. I'm up for Moosilauke but if you'd rather do Hale, Jackson, Tom, Field or any other (well, Maybe not Owls Head or Jefferson) I'm game. Just tell me when and where.

    Moosilauke attempt 01/25/04

Amen, sardog. The lack of that one item is (IMO) what forced me to turn around.

    Owl's Head

Gee wiz, JohnL says 1:49am, Jonatha says 1:45am -- we gotta clear this up. Those four minutes could be crucial! donna, I'd like to do Owlshead some day, but I can't keep up with cantdog.

    Tom,Field or moosilauke

Hey Darwin, I'm interested in doing Moosilauke on Friday. That is, of course, assuming the summit forcast isn't calling for -20 temps and 50 mph winds. Leisurely pace is fine. PM me if you're interested.

    Moosilauke attempt 01/25/04

Jason: I empathise with cantdog because I know she really wanted this peak today. As for me, I think Mohamed couldn't have picked a better mountain. It was exhilerating, it put me right on the edge and I had a great time. If done intelligently, it's good to test your limits. That's the only way...

    Moosilauke attempt 01/25/04

I’ve aborted climbs before. But never before have I faced the summit just a short distance away and had the mountain speak so directly to me: “Go ahead. Try it if you want. You might make it. But make it or not, you’re gonna pay dearly if you keep going.” I simply didn’t have enough face...

    NH Winter 48 record comments

Zarathustra: The trips were well documented in Frodo's reports in this forum. Check out Mohamed's website for a handy index of the trip reports and have your calculator ready.

    Frodo Makes the Wires

We are all kooky. It's just a matter of perspective and degree. From my perspective, Frodo and Stinky Feet rate pretty low on the kooky scale but quite high on the incentive, persistance and distinction scales.

    Summit signs...

For designated Wilderness, the Forest Service policy is to provide directional trail signs at junctions but "interpretive" signs, which include summit signs, are not allowed. As sign maker for Wonalancet Out Door Club, I have been directed to NOT place signs at summits in Wilderness, which...

Anyone Ever Make a Tyvek Jacket?

Some of the cheaper hazmat suits are made out of tyvek. We occasionally (are supposed to) use them at work when we are ripping out insulation or old shingles and vintage linoleum and vinal flooring. Like KZKlimber says, they are very uncomfortable. You might as well make a rain jacket out of...

    Recent Mountain Lion Sightings

Lynx There was what I consider to be a reliable sigting by an "any ole Joe" in Wonalancet a couple/few years ago. This guy knows the difference between bobcat, fisher and housecat so I believe him when he says he saw a lynx. Interesting aside: The WMNF is mandated to protect lynx habitat and...

Long Trail, 100 Mile Wilderness and other 2004 plans

Pb: I'm still interested in the Pemi traverse, and both relieved and disappointed that it's not gonna be a 20 mile day trip. But stay in a hut? Yuck! Maybe we can arrange to meet at the summit of Lafayette. Keep me posted. PS: Been a while since I've been in that neck of the woods, but as I...

best "low area" in the whites?

Lots of woods in the valleys. They tend to block the views. Head for a pond where the views open up. Flat Mountain Pond, Sawyer Pond, Greely Ponds, Russell Pond, Lonesome Lake . . .

    Where to stay in NH?

The Ritz Highland, where else? Actually, I'm not too familiar with the Crawford Notch lodgings but I'll grab this opportunity to plug my cousin O.J.'s place, Parker's Motel, in Franconia Notch. A nice, family oriented motel, it's the last commercial establishment on Rte. 3 before the Flume.
