    Washington 4/14/12

I met Tim at Pinkham Notch friday evening around 7 and we hiked up to Hermit Lake. Pack weight up to the shelter was about 45lbs With 2 packs on, one with camping gear and one with winter hiking gear. Wind blew pretty strong all night at the shelter, I wished I had brought a bivy bag to block...

Washington via Lions Head Summer 4/14

Snow was dry and slabby at the start of the day and soft and mushy by the end. Didnt like crossing the slide path in the morning but its seemed alot more stable in the afternoon descending. Trail conditions varied with drifts, in spots and bare rocks in others. First tracks through some of the...

    Hiker Falls into Tuckerman Crevasse

I kind of feel wrong posting this in this thread, but here is a little vid I shot from under the snow in this area last year. http://vimeo.com/25423285 Being a Regular up there, I have to admit that falling into the waterfall hole or a crevasse in that area of The Lip and getting trapped...

The Top 3 New Hampshire Day Hikes for First Timers (sports.yahoo.com)

This trail in its entirety isnt very long, Last time I took a group of moderately fit first timers up it it only took us 1hr 11min to the top, and 3 hours total round trip including East peak. How tedious does a trail that short have the potential of getting? I'd think if someone is worried...

The Top 3 New Hampshire Day Hikes for First Timers (sports.yahoo.com)

I always recomend Mount Osceola Trail via Tripoli Road, and have never had negative feedback from first timers. I think its one of the best work to reward ratios available in the Whites.

    Mt. Washington Road Race jitters

At least your wife will have a reliable ride down and dependable support at the top. I made the cut in 2009 and then over trained and strained a muscle pretty bad a week before the race. I still went up and provided the ride down to the other runners I had commited too. After seeing how others...

What gear do you dream of getting, or getting rid of....

I would like a Black Diamond Firstlight please? Vestibule for it would be icing on the cake.

    QR Codes on the Trail

Good Point. It seems that I inevitably run into a family in Jeans and tshirts hiking up the trail when I'm descending. They are usually about 1/3 the way up and they ask me in all seriousness if they are almost at the top. Sometime this is alarmingly late in the day. I'm sure I'm not the only...

    Pilot Ridge?

I was curious about that too, so thanks. The USGS Topos show a 4x4 trail that ascends most of the way up and was curious if that was still a viable path to gain the summit of Hutchins TOPO MAP on ACME MAPPER

    Pilot Ridge?

Just planning some adventures for next summer, and was curious if there is a herd path that follows the pilot ridge between The Bulge and Hutchins Mountain?

    Washington?

I went up the east side last week and turned around at lions head due to the high winds and the snow/graupel that those winds were transporting. A full face mask is highly recomended! My balaclava and goggles covered everything but the tip of my nose and it felt like that little piece of...

    North Uncanoonuc 2/12/12

White Dot up, Red Dot Down. Trail conditions on the white dot were super icy , lots of water ice and snow ice on the trail despite the surrounding ground on the sides of the trail being bare. I wore traction all the way up. The Summit was bare. The red dot trail was mostly ice free, I...

    Cardigan/Firescrew Peak 2/11

Manning Trail up Dukes Down. Trails and off Trail is covered with a weight bearing crust. Crust was difficult to puncture. Traction was used and highly recomended for the ascent. The ski trail was also boiler plate crust and was still pretty smooth except for a few post holes from a moose.

    Ice Climbing Boots

I second this. I have a pair of Koflach Verticals and they are supposed to be more designed for ice than the expes, but they are not even close in performance to when I've used La Sportivas. I like the koflachs for alpine ascents, but they will burnout your calves quick on vertical ice

Monroe 1/24 Visibility we dont need no stinkin visibility

Haha Ive stayed in the dungeon and I would take any other option next time. Once temps get above 20 in there the mice get really active. But that was a while back not sure if its been improved now.

    NC Hikes ?

Again thanks for the input everyone and I'm glad I asked. I ended up having alot less free time than I had originally thought I would for a hike on this trip and a quick trip over to pilot mountain per Amicus' recomendation satisfied my jones to get outside nicely. My Blog entry for Pilot...

Thanks. I'm glad I asked, this looks like it will be a better option for me this trip. Maybe I'll get to both places.
