What about the case where it is actually a remote family member that is making the call (e.g. overdue hiker)? Obviously, calling 911 is not an option. For trips to The Whites, I've been leaving the phone numbers for both NH F&G and the AMC. Maybe the NH F&G number isn't so helpful? Anybody...

I did this same hike last year at this time (5/16/2009), only I continued up to the summit of Zealand via the Twinway. As I recall, I didn't have any big issues with snow until the Twinway. There were some patches of deep (1-2ft) snow that slowed progress, although we barebooted the whole way...

A colleague went in last year from Rte 302 and got turned back last year at Norcross Pond due to high water and no readily apparent 'whack around. I'm wondering if this was just a result of the weather that week, or whether something else (like beaver activity) has made that section of the trail...

I have a Hiker Pro that I use with a quick-disconnect at the bite valve. It works well, however I sometimes worry about over-filling. I only carry the filter on multi-day backpacking trips. -Steve
