Hiking an old favorite with new eyes, Dickey-Welch

Thanks Forestgnome, I hope so... she's eager and loves the outdoors, but hasn't had anyone in her life to really get her out there. It's new territory for us as well :)

Hiking an old favorite with new eyes, Dickey-Welch

Since recently becoming a Big Brother and Big Sister to our two next-door neighbor nine-year-old twins, Janelle and Aaron, we’ve found ourselves adapting our outdoor activities to accommodate them. This has been a new and challenging sort of adventure – finding proper gear that fits, testing the...

Looking for input on potential postcards

Thanks everyone! Pudgy - In photo three, I added some exposure around Meena to make her glow a little and brought her shape forward and tried (not terribly successfully) to bring out some features instead of just a dark form. You're right though, there just may be no good way to get this one...

Looking for input on potential postcards

Hi all, We are going to create actual postcards out of some of these five images. I thought it might be interesting to get your input in terms of: Which do you like the most Which do not work Which need some tweaking or would make them even better. All these images are from our trip to Nepal...

"The Grid" has replaced "The List"

An interesting discussion but hardly anything to argue about... We're all here because we love the Whites and love hiking in them. Who cares if somebody just climbs the same peak that they love over and over again, or if somebody else wants to red line each trail, or hike The Grid or hit...

A bunch of trail reports and seeking some intell on Owl's Head

Thanks Bob and Geri and David, I likely won't try for it until next weekend anyway, so may as well wait and see if I can talk to somebody from the meetup group!

A bunch of trail reports and seeking some intell on Owl's Head

Hi all, I spent five days over the Labor Day weekend tramping around the Whites checking out trails and peak bagging for our campaign. Peaks bagged included Lafayette, Lincoln, Liberty, Flume, Jackson, Pierce, Eisenhower, Waumbek, Tom, Field, Willey and Hale. I won't get into all of those trails...

Will a little ol' hurricane slow you down?

Staying home Sunday... no need to go someplace where there's flying trees. Also, don't want to risk ending up as a story in the Union Leader! Can you imagine the comments section if one of us needed a rescue in a hurricane?!?! *phew* Anyway, plenty to do indoors, and yeah, we'll be taking...

    Rescue on Eisenhower?

Yesterday (Wed. Aug. 17) we witnessed what appeared to be a rescue helicopter land on the summit of Mt. Eisenhower at about 3:30 in the afternoon. Took off again after about ten minutes. We were coming down the Jewell Trail so it was tough to see exactly what happened. (Or even if it was a...

Is it the height of Thru Hiker Season?

We ran across more than a dozen North Bounders over the course of the day Saturday around Galehead Hut. One pair from Rhode Island we ran into coming toward North Twin from South Twin. We turned them around when they asked us how far to Ethan Pond :)

Camping in area of Carter Hut

Quick question: wondering if anyone has pitched a tent in the col between Carter Dome and Wildcat A, around Carter Hut someplace. Or up around the summit of Carter Dome? Are there any legal spots around there to recommend? You can PM me if you like. Thanks.

Way to go, great post Trish. Ever since we did a weekend in Lake Placid in June, Marcy is on our list! See you at one of your talks, we haven't figured out which one yet :)

I fought the grouse and the grouse won!

Howdy Grouseking! I considered calling my grouse adversary GrouseKing but thought of you and decided I didn't need two Grouse (Grouses?) mad at me. Nice pic! Here's some shots of the hike, nothing too special but hard earned! http://danandmeenakshi.phanfare.com/5204976

I fought the grouse and the grouse won!

Thanks everybody... Kevin: You bet it's their backyard, no issues here. That's why I turned tail and ran instead of punting the little bugger like a field goal kick! Unstrung - Oh, no question this guy was a badass. He was the Terminator of Poultry. Kerry - Yeah, I've been startled into a...

I fought the grouse and the grouse won!

On Saturday, I did a out and back to Mt. Cabot via the Unknown Pond Trail from the Mill Brook Road side. It's a not much used way to get there and the trail from the road to the Unknown tent site is fairly overgrown. Nice though, not too muddy, moderate grades all the way and not a single other...
