Losing Weight and Getting into Shape

Surely you've read the article “Cutting off the nose to save the penis”? Lots of quotable material there.

    WMNF Northeast Swift Comment Period

Surely the consulting firm gave itemized budget numbers along with their proposal? I have often wondered, when hearing about varies habitat restoration project, at what cost is this being undertaken. I can only imagine that these projects must be difficult to define, before procurement, thus...

Children, sports, hiking, and acceptable risk

Perhaps one of the AMC trip leaders can give us AMC's policy re: children on organized hikes, summer and winter. Surely that will put this debate to rest. :D Any takers? Kevin? :) ;)

$25,000 fine assessed for teen hiker

Mason Family Statement dated 4/2010 I ran across the Mason Family (press release?) during a google search. Not much new info but I thought I would attach it to this old thread for future reference.

    WMNF Northeast Swift Comment Period

Interesting. I wonder what the pros & cons are of letting nature do the reclamation of the wildlife habitats? Additionally, I would like to know what the anticipated cost is for this reclamation. The net overall project is probably in the black.

3,000 vertical feet with excellent footing?

If you go to Madison post some pics of the rockwork along with the granite compass. Should be done by now.

    Dual Survival

I like Dave. Anyone that would cut his arm with a knife, pour gun power on it and light it up to see if would cauterize is OK in my book. He's a good combination of redneck git-ur-dun and team player. Cody on the other hand is a pansy. I lost all respect for the guy when he tried to...

    Blacktail Butte (Grand Teton NP)

I've been watching conditions out there with an eye on the end of July. Blacktail Butte Too bad about the views. Looks like a good vantage point to view the Tetons 7 miles to the northwest or perhaps Gannett 60 miles to the southeast.

Dead Moose around Chocorua: Big animal getting at it?

I have it on good authority that the leg was a prosthesis and was retrieved to be given to another moose that needed it. I don't know about the other injuries tho.

Children, sports, hiking, and acceptable risk

Perhaps these activities/behaviors are a way to self regulate ones own chemistry? Activities that allow for an increasing level of risk-taking may be especially attractive? e.g. hiking, gymnastics. To quote a sentence from Chinooktrail's recent TR talking about a hiking trip to the Whites...

    Geotagging Photographs

Mo, you're way ahead of the curve. If only you could profit on the idea. For hikers with a GPS is app is the ticket. What I'd like to see is a goggle map pop-up window on a picture mouseover. This of course would work in all social media sites, including embedded pics on VFFT. :)

    Geotagging Photographs

Good point Mo If that was the case and I had to wait each time for the camera to acquire satellites it wouldn't work for me. If I'm peakbagging my pictures are taken on the go. I could always carry my GPS and record a waypoint every time I take a picture. Perhaps Google will continue to...

    Geotagging Photographs

Geotagging Photographs The recent thread “video/camcorders” got me looking at the Linux line of cameras. Browsing their line I was intrigued with their new DMC-TS3 camera. It appears to have some pretty impressive stats for a point & shoot. One of the features that intrigued me was it's...

    Sunscreen - friend or foe?

I agree, I can easily burn while in direct sunlight. I use Neutrogena SPF 85 sunblock and it works quite well. FYI – if you feel the need to use products containing zinc oxide, diaper rash ointment is an inexpensive alternative. The RDI for Vitamin D is 600 IU/day. From my normal diet I...

nice NBC segment on spring water in Yosemite

I agree. This permit system was implemented as a short term stop gap method to try and mitigate safety issues surrounding the massive crowds hiking half dome. It is my understanding the NPS will have a permanent system in place for the 2012 season. I'm sure they will take steps to make sure...

nice NBC segment on spring water in Yosemite

If you have plans to go this spring/summer, mentally prepare for the crowds. I was fortunate to experience light crowds on 5/18-5/19. Big snow year with lots of water. BTW - Half Dome permits have been bought up for the entire year by scalpers. I didn't need one as the cables weren't up yet.

Hike my hike – damn it! (hmhdi)

I didn't read the whole thing. Only got as far a “pack sniffer” before I lost my dinner. lol

Work on Lowell wind farm to start in August

I would also add that current state and federal mandates are a strong incentive to consider wind energy. I would take this one step further and suggest any decommissioning plan should restore the site to "it's original state". This may drive more renewable design and construction criteria for...

Work on Lowell wind farm to start in August

Not surprising when the town has been promised between 410K and 530K annually. This will become very important 5-7 years after commissioning the project.
