    Climber Who Left Partner Cited for Disorderly Conduct

    This is an odd one. So one guy gets scared and wants to get beamed up. His partner is all set and wants to backtrack down (and probably continue with the climb?). I wouldn't have left the scared dude but is this really disorderly conduct? There are no injuries here.

    Up or Down?

    I believe in self-sufficiency I always leave my itinerary with someone but realistically, a search probably wouldn't be initiated for a couple of days after not checking in. There is no way I'm going to stay put through a couple of nights hoping someone is going to come rescue me. I'm going to...

    A lot of tweakers cooking at home in the area?

    let us remember 9/11

    Outstanding symbolism, design and construction I know there are a few A&E types here so I thought I would post a couple of pictures and thoughts. This is the south pool with the museum in the background. This pool has the names of: First Responders WTC South Tower Flight 93 Flight 77 Pentagon...

    Hydrofracking for natural gas in Catskills

    Those fracking people :) I don't know enough about this subject but I thought I read a report of fracking operations somewhere in the US where the (EPA?) required treatment of the return slurry. The town, county or state ended up funding the building a sewage treatment plant to treat this...

    Water for Wounds

    When I was a kid my father repeatedly told my bother and me to pee on a wound if we were unable to get treatment quickly. I think it was in the US Army Field Manual from his WWII days. Never did try that one tho. The last backcountry injury I had was last spring. I damn near degloved the pinky...

    Falling

    My dreams of falling always included being naked. I've always wondered what that was all about. When the sky walk, at the Grand Canyon, opened a couple years ago I took my daughters to check it out. I don't particularly have an issue with heights but moving around that glass walkway freaked me...

    Leave no Trace...Really?

    Nols claims they defined the principals of LNT (that they had been teaching for years) for the Forest Service that they would implement in the early 90's.

    let us remember 9/11

    After my last visit to NYC 10 years ago to see the “pile”, I'm looking forward to my visit this week to see the memorial. I'm hopeful the 10 year anniversary will mark the beginning of a new and prosperous decade.

    Family sues Park Service over Aggressive Goat

    Olympic National Park rangers have killed a goat that had become habituated and aggressive. It appears they are now being pro-active in protection of the park's visitors. The park updated it's “Mountain Goat Action Plan” this June based upon feedback from Wildlife experts regarding goat...

    Leave no Trace...Really?

    There are other areas and environments were it is required or preferable to pack out your feces as well as your TP. If you are out for a few days the weight of accumulated feces can become objectionable. :eek: A couple of years ago I read a LNT article about solar drying in order to drastic...

    Post Irene Damage in Wilderness Areas

    That’s a fair point. I hereby declare that all previous references to the term peakbaggers are synonymous with the term hiker. ;):)

    Post Irene Damage in Wilderness Areas

    Arguably – (as used to qualify a statement of an opinion or belief) Obviously, this entire discussion is based on opinion. There is little to no comprehensive data available regarding wilderness use (to my knowledge) that would allow for a fact based discussion. Agreed I'll take the Sandwich...

    Post Irene Damage in Wilderness Areas

    Thanks – there is no doubt that trailworkers do important work in heavily used areas like the Whites. I'm sure it can be a balancing act between creating a pleasant user experience and resource protection. :)

    Sharing your water - survival, comfort, or ethical question ?

    Oops, I can see now the originally linked article doesn't give enough information. http://www.nps.gov/grca/parknews/2011-08-29_distressed-hiker.htm I suspect heat exhaustion was the cause of his irrational decisions.

    Sharing your water - survival, comfort, or ethical question ?

    I'm no expert on the effects of heat exhaustion on cognitive thinking, but it would be interesting to know why he wanted to continue up when it would have been less taxing to go down and cool water awaited him at the bottom.

    Post Irene Damage in Wilderness Areas

    Good point Creag While it is true that Wilderness areas are used by rock climbers, backpackers, cross-country skiers, hikers, backcountry skiers, wildlife enthusiasts, ice climbers, trail runners, outdoor enthusiasts among others, arguably the trail systems are overwhelmingly used by...

    3 hikers die from fall after crossing warning barrier in Yosemite

    Given the publicity Yosemite has gotten this season and continues to get, hopefully, the park service and forest service will take a good look at what measures can be taken to pro-actively increase public safety to those folks visiting our parks.
