Post Irene Damage in Wilderness Areas

I like the idea that in 1 or 2 generations we could have here in New Hampshire an area with the purist concept of Wilderness without the influences of special interest groups. I think it would be unrealistic to expect this would be possible in all 5 wilderness areas, but certainly doable in...

Post Irene Damage in Wilderness Areas

Should damage done to the access infrastructure*, by Irene in the 5 wilderness areas of NH, be repaired/replaced or should the landscape be left as is? We all know wilderness designations within NF & NP have the following definition. Most, if not all, public land managers of wilderness areas...

Sharing your water - survival, comfort, or ethical question ?

That’s an easy one. Generally speaking, if someone else is in need, I'll help if possible. Personal responsibility and human compassion are not mutually exclusive.

OK, you got me there. I'd have to pass on that one.

    peakbaggers: please don't flag...it's trash

It's funny, I've seen far more trash on the trail than I've seen flagging in the woods. As a matter of fact, I've seen many more balloons in the woods than flagging. I always pick up food rappers and such that I find on the trail but watch most folks pass right by it.

3 hikers die from fall after crossing warning barrier in Yosemite

I think we established the fact that 2 of the 3 folks swept over the falls ignored warning barriers 50 or so posts ago. What I find more interesting is a statement in a recent article about the rock fall that smashed cabins in Curry Village at Yosemite. They have installed temporary barricades...

3 hikers die from fall after crossing warning barrier in Yosemite

I definitely could have been clearer, but I wanted to express myself in a funner way. :) Capisce? It's been my impression of the opposition's posts, with the exception of a handful of folks, the theme has been the same. It's either this or that (black or white). Additionally the message has...

3 hikers die from fall after crossing warning barrier in Yosemite

I didn't say folks don't take safety seriously. Perhaps I could have could have been clearer. See emphasis below. i.e. if there is no disease why discuss the merits of different causes and cures. Hope that clears it up.

3 hikers die from fall after crossing warning barrier in Yosemite

I didn't compare wilderness to theme parks I compared Yosemite Valley to Theme parks. It's a matter of perspective. I see more parallels than differences. I’m sure this could be implemented in a variety of different ways based upon the demographics, message, desired results etc. It was just...

Out of control slide down a snow field in UT

For anyone that has crossed a steep snow slopes, this video is a good illustration of how fast you can accelerate out of control. Because of the deep snow pack this year, crossings of steep snow slopes like this are still everywhere. Warning: The video may be disturbing.

Status of Mt Whitney Trail - Update

Hopefully the storms doused the Lion fire. The smoke from that was wicked around Whitney.

3 hikers die from fall after crossing warning barrier in Yosemite

Perhaps we can compromise? A more balanced approach? This is a tough crowd, but not unexpected given the audience the message was being delivered to. It's kind of like trying to sell ice to an Eskimo. I'm sure folks view this issue through many difference colored lens. Some probably see this...

3 hikers die from fall after crossing warning barrier in Yosemite

Can we agree? Can we agree there's room for improvement in the visitor death rate? A 2007 study indicates there were 112 deaths in Yose over a 10 year span ending in 1999. Thats an average of 11 deaths per year. The average yearly death rate is now at 12-15. While most companies, over the...

3 hikers die from fall after crossing warning barrier in Yosemite

I'll throw this into the mix. Yosemite Park is a lot like many other parks in the US. Disney, 6 flags, Universal Orlando all have thousands of visitors a year, they all have attractions and they all make money. Folks go to each one of these theme parks for family vacations, weekend getaways...

3 hikers die from fall after crossing warning barrier in Yosemite

Unfortunately, there has been another fatality in Yosemite. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43976584/ns/us_news-life/?GT1=43001 The trail never officially closes. That’s over 3 times as many deaths than were on Everest this year. Oh well, the cost of having wild national park I guess?
