3 hikers die from fall after crossing warning barrier in Yosemite

While we wait for the consultants report, I'll throw this on the table. It has been reported that the 3 individuals involved were Assyrians and part of a church group that lived in the second largest Assyrian community in the US. It is entirely possible these individuals had very little...

Outdoor Research - Rocky Mt low gaiters - product review

I sleeved the boot strap on my winter gaiters with a piece of 1” tubular webbing. It's bomber. I was a little concerned that my summer scree gaiter boot strings may get caught on rocks or roots causing a trip and fall with my trailrunners. I put them to the test recently and didn't find that to...

Brown Bear attacks group of teens in Alaska

Perhaps I should have asked - Would you please explain what specific additional or different things, you believe, could have been done to minimize the risk they faced? Afterall these threads are all about learning. :)

Brown Bear attacks group of teens in Alaska

Dirtpig67- It sounds as those your time in Alaska could add valuable specific information to this discussion. As you probably know the teens in this situation were, (suppose to be) following excepted protocol for traveling in bear habitat. Would you please explain what specific additional or...

Brown Bear attacks group of teens in Alaska

Reading through some of Nols blog posts it has been unofficially stated that: Not all 7 members of this group were given bear spray Nols is being asked to supply enough bear spray to all of their Alaska courses, currently underway, that each student will have there own. This to be done during...

Brown Bear attacks group of teens in Alaska

It sounds like the students were on the "Alaskan Mountaineering Course" I believe the last death on a Nols course occurred during the "Student Expedition" on a mountaineering course. A student was lost, never found and presumed dead. It was theorized that he fell in a moulin while getting water.

Geez, and I was just thinking how respectful this thread has been compared to other forums. Oh well.

    The Whitney Lottery

The process of getting a walkin permit is somewhat convoluted. :) Im sure Kevin can answer your question better than I but I'll give is a shot because I just went through it. Between May 1st and Nov 1st there is a maximum amount of people (quota) that are allowed in the Whitney Zone (which...

No, but there was a "Moody" impersonator near by. Be prepared, see how he did it.

    Soy protein vs. whey protein.

The original report can be found here. Pg 23 shows your graph 1 large egg = 6g protein or 3% of the RDI – 186mg Cholesterol or 62% RDI 12oz 2% milk = 12g protein or 7% of the RDI – 29mg Cholesterol or 10% RDI

    Soy protein vs. whey protein.

Milk is the best protein source and has the lowest carbon footprint. Buy milk from a local dairy that have grass fed cows and you get extra points. :) Eggs have a cholesterol problem.

    Colorado hiking maps?

I'm a big fan of the Delorme Atlas & Gazetteer for getting around in CO. It covers the entire state, shows the topography and all the varies forest service roads you need to get to the TH. Buy it online at WM cheap. The Delorme coupled with NG state topo for CO and I'm good to go. And of course...

    Horsepacking and packanimals

While hiking the other day I ran across this trail sign at 12K While hiking in CO and CA I have run across horsepackers, packmules and packgoats while on the trail. I hadn't heard the term "loose herding" before and as you can see there isn't a lot of vegetation in this area to graze on...

Bushwack from Carrigain to Vose Spur

I did a Nancy > Carrigain > Vose Spur loop in 06. I remember the Carrigain to Vose Spur and the north side of Vose Spur as being pretty easy.
