    Gatorade question

how about we go for three...lucky number! that's what i do if i know there will not be any water sources, except i'll have pemixed gatoraid and water in a light bottle (no nalgene)! gatoraid is good, but sometimes you just want water for drinking/cooking/etc. i always carry powdered mix, i like...

paddling, stillettos, gullies, ice, snow, canadian comedians, beer, fires, toilet seats and wicker...or was that liquor...or was that both!?!?!? hey, i wasn't there, nor did i hike up boot spur that weekend! not sure who y'all met calling themselves the starchild. but y'all seem like great...

    MSR Reactor anyone?

the colder it is the more sketchy it works. mine was flaring up, acting crazy and never brought water to a full boil at -4. we were able to cook and eat, but i have only taken my simmerlight out in winter since then. actually, it was prolly more like 5 cuz we used it for dinner.

OR set to pass Beacon Bill

what i meant was if someone was up there stuck/dying/trapped in a brutal storm, unable to be rescued...what is more important; the gear and knowledge to survive until help comes, or a working beacon that pinpoints the location of a dead body? i totally agree with your next post and ironically...

OR set to pass Beacon Bill

i think requiring all climbers to pass a test or take a class would be a much better idea (think katadin in winter.) if the conditions are too bad for rescue a beacon, it is pretty useless, but knowledge and training would still be very valuable. i can't listen to the audio here at work, but in...

    carter notch

yes! yes! yes! hiking over the wilcats kicks your butt but its a super fun trail! and the rainbow trail is really sweet. we descended it after carterdome and hight and loved it, saw sunset through the birch glades and returned to the hut after dark. climbing aroung the ramparts is like being a...

any thoughts on water access on AT in Maine?

another option is to just drink the water. go for it!! there's so much snow melting and run-off i would feel very comfortable drinking it straight, though heating it up would certainly be nice and it'd keep warm for a long time in a bottle coozy.

    Unsuccessful Season

no such thing!!!! two weekends ago, hiking pass the ice climbers in the flume with 35-40ish pound, 3day 2ngt packs, breaking through the snow and ice almost falling into the river and trying to whack to the flume slide trail in 11/2 to 3 feet of snow and deeper drifts in the upper part of the...

hey that might have been me! my buddy and i were camped out off trail lower than shinning rock and there was a larger party, 4 or 6 maybe, camped out higher up off the trail. they said they had a fire, still wondering how they managed that!?!?!? i should have posted a report and some pics, twas...

    going through the ice

yikes! this happened to me two weekends ago in the flume except i didn't get wet, my foot and snowshoe were just dangling in nothingness. when i could finally get my foot and snowshoe back out of the hole, we peered down 4 or 5 feet to the running water below. not good! has anyone ever fallen...

    Vehicle vandalism in Whites

perhaps its just my bad/good luck, but of the 4 times i have parked at the 19milebrook trailhead, including last weekend, i have never not seen fresh broken glass and have seen broken windows on parked cars there once. actually that's not true though, the 2ed and 3rd times i actually parked at...
