have you ever hiked to a closed hut expecting it to be open?

sorry dave, i must respectfully disagree. i think people did say that. look below the dotted line at the end of this post. i copied and pasted a bunch of comments that i took as being excuses for what happened. go ahead and pick them apart if you must, but please understand the general feeling i...

How can you tell if you encounter a VFTT member on the trail?

you could ask descending hikers, "how were the views from the top?" or ask climbers, "think there will be good views from the top?"

have you ever hiked to a closed hut expecting it to be open?

naw dude, not right. i wanted to "assail" the people making excuses for the three hikers. I wanted to "assail" the people saying its understandable to head into the mountains in winter conditions unprepared! as i said, no need for a stoning of the three hikers in the town square. i did feel...

have you ever hiked to a closed hut expecting it to be open?

has anyone heard of the white mountain guide or the AMC i do not understand all the comments on the various threads about how there are lots of people who do not check or even know about this site, the RMC site or other hiking sites before trips. i don't see what difference that makes. That is...

have you ever hiked to a closed hut expecting it to be open?

just curious. i think the results might explain the strong reaction to the events that happened. there are mistakes and we all make them and learn from them. there are really stupid mistakes we make less often and learn from them. then there are mistakes like hiking to a hut that is not open...

    Hiking in the rain?

only a cold winter rain would make me think about cancelling a trip...... although there are times when rain has tipped a decision based other major factors and the rain was just the feather that broke the camels back. usually i would just change the destination.

    Holding Branches

what he said...exactly! if i can step down on something and hold it safely for people to pass, i do. i don't think its rude or friendly to hold or not hold, its about safety and the reality of what usually happens.

whackin' and avoiding taking one in the eye

luck sometimes runs out. i haven't had any trees inflict damage on my eyes, but after reading a few things lately about sticks and branches and eyesight problems......i'm thinking. i have safety glasses for grinding, power tools etc. is this what y'all wear for protection? or something else...

Does color matter (when buying gear)?

title here i pick colors/brightness depending what i am buying. No black or camo colored headlamps for me, same with stuff sacks. lx93, i really liked your comment about seeing your stuff if it rolled 20 feet downhill at night:) i wouldn't try and match a pack color with a jacket. Unless i...

Mountain Chicken -- Yummy or Not?

the secret in spring is to use the meat in a stew to help with the taste. i can find my mom's recipe if anyone wants to try. i believe there's something in potatoes that helps absorb the awful taste, although the spices and other veggies certainly help with that. as the bird's diet changes with...

Do you talk on a cell phone while hiking?

IIRC, that aron dude was stuck in Little BlueJohn Canyon, which dumps into the larger Horseshoe Canyon. I've hiked in horseshoe canyon, there's a part of Canyonlands national park there where you can visit some amazingly spectacular art on the canyon walls. There is no way a cel phone in that...

Do you talk on a cell phone while hiking?

ok, ok ok, i was wrong with my earlier statement. i have seen the light, i agree now, celphones don't suck....rude people do :) but maybe...just maybe.... cel phones make them worse!?!? i or my partner always carry one for emergency use. it stays turned off in a ziplock burried in the depths...
