Beta, please, on Jefferson and/or Adams, Castle, Israel, Gulfside?

Hale - Essentially snow free according to trip report Tim - If you need Hale, someone just posted that it was basically snow free. I am sure you saw that TR though. I would not say that the Carters or Twins would necesarily be any more snowy than the Presidentials at this stage. Just a...

    Stowe Pinnacle

A class 4 road in VT is anything that is not maintained in the winter. Class 4 roads vary widely. Some are passable with any type of motor vehicle, others look more like a streambed. Can't say with any certainty what the condition of the specific class 4 road is you are referring to, but...

02/25 (A monday) looking to hike....

So my work schedule got changed around a bit and I am looking to get out on 2/25. Not particular in what I hike though I am preferable to getting either Carrigan or Owls Head done if someone is so inclined. PM me, post, or e-mail ([email protected]) if this works for your schedule. Happy...

Mt Washington Auto Road-Does it Count?

Actually, it depends on what group association you are hike for. The highpointers simply seek to attain the highest point in each state regardless of the manner in which the summit is attained. For example, quite a few people regularly get Mt. Mitchell (North Carolina) by driving to the parking...

Madison via Valley Way, Osgood 2008-02-14

Well Tim - I guess our estimate of wind speed was a little low. Nice summary of the trip. Still surprised that someone would make an attempt on a northern presidential without gloves or mittens of any kind in February. What a day to be in the mountains! Enapai (Dave)

    Snowmobiling for Hikers

Snowmobiling Well Papa Bear - Since I live in VT with a VAST trail right behind my house, let me try to answer your questions. It should be noted that I have owned snowmobiles in the past and greatly enjoyed riding them throughout the State of Vermont and into New Hampshire. So here are some...

    Mid week hikers

Due to my work schedule, I have Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays off through the month of February and would like to get out a couple of times (been in the house for the entire winter season so far taking care of a newborn). If you are one of those that regularly gets out in mid-week and...

Jay Peak via LT northbound (from Rte 242) - 01/30/08

Conditions: The LT was well packed out by hikers and backcountry skiers. Due to the overnight rain, the snow at the lower elevation was quite sticky. It rained on us off and on throughout the trip. The snow becomes more powder-like as elevation is gained. Required Equipment: Snowshoes were...

    Salomon Winter Boot Opinions

B52s I just got mine last week. So far I have only gone out around the yard in them, but I like what I see. I am going out next week hopefully and could offer more after a more extensive test. I haven't run into anyone that does not like them so far.

    Corey Road Parking

The traditional route to the Seward Range is the second trailhead on Coreys Road. The first trailhead, which heads towards Duck Hole, is prior to the winter gate and would be a feasible parking location. The two trailheads are roughly 2 miles apart with generally flat terrain (in case the gate...

    Pemi River Flooded

Great pics Grouseking - You have some very nice pictures of your time on Mt. Flume today. Great shots. I particularly liked the shot of Bondcliff in the sun with the shadows on the valley floor. Just out of curiosity, what do you use for a camera? Cheers, Enapai

    Sewards via Calkins (7/21/07)

Sewards this weekend... BigandSlow, It was nice to run into your group this weekend. Your trip report covers everything I was going to cover. What a wonderful weekend. Sorry to hear about your boots. Mud and people pretty much sums up the Sewards on 07/21/2007. Enapai

Any studies on which bug dope works best with Black Flies?

Bug Off! BACKPACKER, I know some forum members don't like the mag, tested out a bunch of bug products which wa published for the June 2007 issue (page 86 if you have the mag). Results: Sawyer MAXI-DEET (98% DEET - $5.95 for 2 oz) and 3M Ultrathon (34% DEET - $10.50 for 2 oz) both provided...

    Pikes Peak, CO

Pikes Peak Having been out to CO last summer, the need to start early should not be under-estimated. Lightning is a huge risk and the general rule of thumb is be back in the tress by 1300 (1:00 pm) at the latest, noon is better. Longs Peak in RMNP is a little bit longer (14 or so miles) and has...

    Reddington

This up-coming weekend, some buddies and I are headed over to ME for a week. Ah yes the bugs. Well, we are spending a few days in Baxter State Park and then headed over to the Rangeley-Stratton area. At this stage, we are looking at doing some hiking around Abraham, Sugarloaf, and Spaudling as...

    Tecumseh Conditions?

Conditions I have found that above 3000 feet there is definately consistent snow cover. Expect anywhere from 2-5 feet near the summit. I would recommed carrying snowshoes even if you wait until the 12th.
