Cannon Mountain - Environmental Damage, Hiking Prohibition, and SB217

"trashing the wilderness"? Really? And you're going to compare some erosion on a ski trail to the clear-cutting of 100,000s of acres of forest and the subsequent wildfires? I wouldn't put the passage of the Weeks Act in the same category as cleaning up Mittersill. Sorry, but that's a...

    A winter Long Trail attempt?

If there was ever a winter to do a LT thru-hike, this would be it -- relatively little snow cover and relatively mild temperatures. The LT is not blazed for winter travel and very little of it is used in wintertime (Killington/Pico, Abe/Ellen, Camels Hump, Mansfield, Jay... and that's about...

Cannon Mountain - Environmental Damage, Hiking Prohibition, and SB217

2 things I'm wondering... I wonder how these photos were taken in an area where no foot traffic is allowed. Was it before the prohibition? I wonder how many hikers concerned about erosion on ski slopes go hiking during mud season.

Thirteen Falls ATTEMPT from Lincoln Woods - ARG!

I'll second that. Especially the area around the height-of-land was difficult to follow and was very wet as well. I've done it once in each direction, but probably won't head back that way for a while.

Attention Peakbaggers! Soliciting list / peak data

Great stuff, Tim. Fun for spreadsheet geeks like me. :) Here's my modest contribution: NH4K - 19 years (1991-2010), Moosilauke, Waumbek NH4K(solo) - 13 years (1997-2010), Moosilauke, Cabot Interestingly, Washington was my second NH4K overall, but my 22nd solo, and 9th in winter NH4K's...

    Mt. Mansfield VT

Yep - you can park on the side of the road where it's gated and just walk around the gate. IIRC, it adds about a mile each direction, but a pleasant walk.

    Irene Storm Track

The Quechee covered bridge is standing, barely. But the road approaches on either side are completely washed out. The bridge itself looks like a skeleton. Simon Pearce and the adjacent building suffered significant damage. The Route 4 bridge over the gorge was closed for a time. Floodwater...

    WMNF Closure!

In central Vermont, I think there more roads closed than open. Basically, you can't drive anywhere right now. I know people who are completely cut off, and likely will be for a while.

    Irene Storm Track

I used to walk across the Quechee covered bridge almost daily. I couldn't believe how much water was coming over the dam. I've seen heavy rainstorms and massive spring runoffs that weren't even close to this. Simon Pearce, unfortunately, was flooded out, too. Taftsville covered bridge and...

    WMNF Closure!

Water is well over Route 4 in Woodstock, VT. Quechee covered bridge is gone; I've heard the Taftsville bridge is gone, too. Lots of washed out roads. Hard to believe... :(

    Weminuche Wilderness Area

Not really. It only covers the Chicago Basin peaks - Window, Eolus, Sunlight. Nat'l Geographic's Trails Illustrated series is a great map; it's #140 for the Weminuche. Depending on how much time you have, a good loop (with small hitchhike or long roadwalk) is to go up the Elk Creek Trail...

    Map Questions

It's no longer published and Steve didn't have any left. However, there is a new map out just within the past few months that basically does the same thing. I bought one from Steve (Mountain Wanderer in Lincoln) for $10. Great map for seeing the big picture of the entire WMNF.

Pretty, Easy Hikes in the Upper Valley NH/VT

The "Upper Valley" refers to the area around Lebanon/Hanover/White River Jct. There's not an exact definition of it, but basically extends from about Ascutney Mtn to Mt. Moosilauke, and from Cardigan to Killington. This is a decent resource for local hiking/walking: http://www.uvtrails.org/...

Pretty, Easy Hikes in the Upper Valley NH/VT

Two other good ones for mellow hikes -- Quechee Gorge. Great for out-of-towners. You can hike down to the gorge to get to the water and play on some rocks (if the water returns to normal summer levels). Or hike upstream to the dam, and across a strip of land to Marshland Farm. Usually some...

Springtime On The Willey Range, 3/26/2011

Hi, Earl, I was the guy who took your picture on Field. Glad you enjoyed your day out, but too bad you didn't get the view from Avalon. Nancy and I broke it out on our descent -- short trailbreak but sweet views from there.

    Fill in your divots!

Admittedly, I threw out the 80/20 numbers without giving it much thought. The point being that the people inconvenienced -- or even endangered -- by postholes is greater than the people inconvenienced or endangered by monorail. This was in response to your tacit (and maybe tongue-in-cheek)...

    Fill in your divots!

I'll give answering your questions a shot... Postholing -- for whatever reason people do it -- potentially creates a dangerous trail (ankle injuries, etc.), especially in March when soft snow tends to freeze hard. Not cleaning snow off the upper branches does not add to the potential for...

    Fill in your divots!

I'm guessing this was meant somewhat tongue-in-cheek. Still... Perhaps a majority of the hikers, but probably not the majority of the hikes undertaken. It's probably one of those 80/20 things -- 20% of the hikers do 80% of the hikes. Besides, how many trails really have significant monorail...

Tucker Johnson shelter destroyed by fire!

I don't think the relo touched the LT north of the "new" Maine Jct. I think it only affected the LT between the new Maine Jct (where the LT and AT split) and Jungle Jct, just south of Pico. (Between the old and new routes, it actually makes for a nice loop hike, with the grand finale on Deer...
