Tucker Johnson shelter destroyed by fire!

Yeah, heard it on VPR this morning. :( That was a nice little shelter; I was surprised when they said it was built in 1969.

    52 With A View...or no more views?

Black (Benton) - Excellent views east to Moosilauke, and other views en route Cube - Good views; fun ledges to explored, especially on the unofficial north summit Resolution - Not the best viewing weather, but I'd say "2 - good" Royce, West - Good/okay. East Royce is much better, even if it is...

    essential equipment

Especially with the freeze-thaw-freeze cycle starting up, the snow is going to get harder and harder. The fellow who fell on Gulfside and slid into King Ravine last March was wearing microspikes at the time. His companion was wearing crampons. Micros are great for shoulder seasons and...

Wal Mart Poles vs the Expensive Stuff

Of all the equipment to spend money on, poles are near the bottom of my list. I just use an old pair of ski poles for my hiking, and have for years, and they work fine. I've been using poles on every hike for 7-8 years, work them pretty decently, and no real issues. I trade them out whenever...

favorite/most convenient town in the Whites ?

Favorite and most convenient are pretty different criteria for me. The most convenient for me is certainly Lincoln, because it is en route to most hikes in the Whites (coming from Vermont), and has all the services I need coming to/from: gas, cheap food, better food, pizza (GH), ice cream, the...

    Parking for Kinsman hike

Happened to somebody else last weekend. About six guys pushed the car out. Parking on the OBP/FW side (northbound) is more spacious and barely adds a few hundred yards to the hike. When the southbound lot was overflowing last weekend, the northbound lot was not 2/3 full.

    Colorado hiking?

Pikes Peak is right there, of course, for your 14er fix, and without a long drive. From CO Springs, you're not that far from the Crestones, either, which are significantly more challenging peaks (exception: Humboldt). You could also hit the Collegiate Peaks near Buena Vista -- Yale, Harvard...

    Least climbed 13-ers list

13,995' (as far as I know, that hasn't changed) And yeah, it would be the toughest 14er if it counted as such. I'm not sure what the prominence is b/t it and Sunlight, but I think it's well below the "official" requirement.

    Least climbed 13-ers list

Sunlight Spire is an "unofficial" 13er, so maybe that's why it didn't make the list. Also, other than the last 100 yards or so, it isn't difficult, at least as compared to some other really remote and daunting 13ers. [Note: I haven't done the Spire, so this is second-hand knowledge/speculation.]

    Cannon Balls?

I came down Cannon to Coppermine Col this past weekend, and the trail up to the first Cannon Ball (NW? N?) was broken out. I descended to Lonesome Lake from there, so I don't know if it is broken all the way across to FJ Trail.

    Least climbed 13-ers list

That's a pretty interesting list. Maybe someday someone can put together the similar concept for various NE lists. I've often wondered about the average finishing order for various lists, too, or slightly different, the mountain that is the most common "last mountain" for a list.

Right around a foot of snow in Woodstock, VT, and still coming down hard. We had four inches in two hours early this morning.

Floundering about on Gothics, Armstrong, and Lower Wolfjaw 1/10/11

I've long wondered what the descent off the north side of Armstrong would be like in the winter. Now I know. :) Thanks for the trip report. Great set of pictures, too.

    Vt 5 4000'

Re: Mansfield -- I did Mansfield this weekend via the LT, and the top .3 was treacherous -- an icy chimney followed by a narrow ridge with sloughing snow. Not much fun. From the Lodge, the Profanity Trail is nearly impossible to follow up. I've lost the trail on Sunset Ridge before, because...

    Mt Adams 11-11-10

I headed up Air Line yesterday, too, leaving the trailhead at around 8:30. I turned off to Madison Hut, did Madison, dropped to Star Lake, and then returned via Air Line, Scar, and Valley Way. The ice was pretty bad, agreed, and tedious. I didn't enjoy a few sections along the Knife Edge...

    Killington

An enjoyable snowshoe, and an enjoyable ski. :) The last bit above the lodge is steep and can be icy, though, so be prepared for the summit push.

    Winter Hiking Boots Recommendations

Then you'll be happy to know you're wrong. :D Or, rather, whoever told you that was wrong. I've been quite warm on plenty of subzero hikes w/o plastic boots, in -50 wind chills above treeline, in snow and sleet and slush, etc. Other body parts get cold well before my feet do, and I've never...
