List of NH State Parks Closed for Inspection/Cleanup

Pawtuckaway I'm surprised Pawtuacaway is not on the list. Hiked there Monday (12/15) and spent more time off the trail than on it. There won't be any snowmobilling in there until some chainsaw clean-up happens.

    Hiking with dogs - Question

Great pics. Sounds like things are going real good. You'll find that as she does more hiking her pads will toughen up, maybe not so much in the winter though. When there is no snow be careful of the the rough type rocky areas. My dog hikes a lot and her pads are much larger (and tougher) than...

    Stabilicers

Another vote for microspikes. My wife and I both have stableicers and have never lost a screw (want to buy a bag of replacement screws). The spikes are just so much lighter. We use the yaktrax when walking around the house.

    GPS controversy explained.

I use two very good topo programs with my GPS and they both showed a trail that didn't exist. When we came to a river crossing I said to my wife, lets just bushwhack this tenth of a mile to the trail and save crossing the river twice. After spending 30 minutes looking for the non-existing trail...

    A Question For Dog Owners

Vibram soles We have a set with thick vibram soles that we tried on our Lab for winter hiking. She has her 4K patch and about 30 winter 4k's. She really lost all her traction and we felt it was too dangerous to keep them on her in icy conditions. Maybe if we could turn them into screw boots...

    Hiking close to home

Belknaps We live in Deerfield and hike the pawtuckaway's a lot, especially in the winter, but the Belknaps are close to you (45 Mins) and are real nice and have trails from easy to difficult. Get up high and you shouldn't see any hunters. Hunting is allowed in pawtuckaway and the Belknaps.

Grouse Attack on Rocky Branch Trail

Yea, I never felt out gunned but like you felt, I was more worried about the bird, especially with the dog nearby. The bird wasn't worried about any of that though.

Grouse Attack on Rocky Branch Trail

It was at the height of land just before starting down toward the river. What surprised me was that he knew there was a dog with me and that still didn't stop him, although my dog would run faster than I did if the grouse went after her like he did me:).

Grouse Attack on Rocky Branch Trail

While hiking up to Mt. Isolation I had an unexpected encounter on the Rocky Branch Trail. My wife and dog were a bit out front when a large bird strutted out into the middle of the trail and stood right in front of me, about 10 feet away. We had a stare down for about 15 or 20 seconds when I...
