    Wildcats in winter

Slide The slide is definitly between Carter Notch and Wildcat A. I did it early this year (before winter but with snow cover) and it wasn't a problem with traction. We used stabilicers but I would think snowshoes would cross just fine. It is very short, probably less than 10 steps.

    Screwboots with Snowshoes

I read some threads mentioning screwboots and am considering trying it out. My question is; does anyone have any experience with using snowshoes while wearing screwboots? Could the screwboots potentially damage or weaken the snowshoes? Thanks, OMW

    Zealand - Bonds Traverse 2/28

Sorry for the delay but I have been out of town for the weekend. I was thinking in Zealand and out over the Bonds. You are the only one who has responded so far. It looks like it is going to be a good day. I also hike with my dog Cinder (black Lab) Nancy

Is it me or my snowshoes??

Tubbs and MSRs I own both Tubbs Mtn expedition and MSR Denali evo ascent snowshoes, I much prefer the MSRs. They are narrower and allow me to walk with a more natural gate and the heel lifts are super (never had one go down unintentionally). I started the earlier thread about losing the...

    MSR Snowshoe Failure Questions

McGiver Kit Thanks to all for the replies. I had everything but the coat hanger. I'm sure that would have done the trick. I contacted MSR today and have four new clevis pin/split ring assemblies on the way. FWIW, I really like my MSRs (especially the heal lifts, which I've never had a...

    MSR Snowshoe Failure Questions

While snowshoeing into Isolation on Saturday I had a very inconvenient equipment failure near the junction of the Rocky Branch and Isolation Trails. On my Denali Evo's, the little pin (with ring and washer) that holds the binding and crampon to the Snowshoe base disappeared (this is also the...

    Winter Booties for Dogs?

We bought booties for our lab but won't use them because of the traction issue. We use what a musher friend of ours suggested, Equate (a zinc oxide), which is a generic brand of Desitin. It's nice to have latex or some other glove for application as it is hard to get off your hands. May...

    Sawyer River Road conditions?

RickB was there on Sunday 12/31 and posted to the trail conditions. He mentioned the road was open but didn't give a detailed report. You may want to email him. I was there on Friday and the road was good then.

Quickest, Easiest Way to Learn How to Use a Compass

Map & Compass Don't know of any online courses but if you can learn the use of the map and compass in an hour, that's pretty quick. Where you live so close to REI That sounds like a good choice. OMW

Ban on hiking in VT in May?

Can't really comment on Camel's Hump or Mansfield but I was on Killington this past weekend 4/30 (I didn't know about the state's policy during mud season, do now though) mud season is over on Killington or there never was one. Still ice near the summit. OMW

    gale and little rivers

Didn't know that on the way up, so I wetted my boots a little but crossed the snowmobile bridge and did the short bushwack on the way down. Thanks

    gale and little rivers

Went up Garfield on Saturday (5/8/06). The South branch and the little tributaries were higher than last week but everything was still crossable (stepped on some rocks just under the surface). Won't take much though to make them too high. OMW
