    Carrying Snowshoes on your pack

Yeah, what he said. It has the virtue of getting the weight of the snowshoes as close to your back as possible, and balance is improved by placing one on each side.

backcountry skis and boots for the trails in the Whites

You will be hard-pressed to realize the benefits of double camber when you're off a packed trail. (The pun at the beginning is unintentional.) What matters more in that circumstance is how the ski responds to a variety of conditions. There is no perfect ski, just like there is no perfect boat...

backcountry skis and boots for the trails in the Whites

I have the Hammerhead, predecessor to the Axl, on my Annums and love it for touring and turning. I can only imagine how sweet the latter must be from the reviews.

So, have you answered the original inquiry privately, or is he deep under cover with CSIS?

backcountry skis and boots for the trails in the Whites

Okay, I thought I'd let others offer suggestions before I chimed in with my (now possibly tiresome) recommendation. But I can't let you continue to be unaware of the Madshus Annum, which I bought last summer and have used many times this winter. This review makes the case as well as I could...

Sidecut of Ski/Broken and Unbroken Snowshoe trails

I've found that wide skis like my Madshus Annums (fka Karhu XCD Guides) often lack a well-defined center groove. When the snow is soft, there's not much wandering around. But when things get crusty on a snowmobile trail or the like, I do find myself wishing I were on my much narrower, more...

    Pin-pin

Fairly sure it's this guy: http://www.canada411.ca/res/4507533224/Alain-Chevrette/198832065.html. Which "might" also be this guy, which you may know from looking at his pics: https://www.facebook.com/pompier1957?fref=browse_search He provided some memorable trip reports here on VFTT in the...

    missing hiker - Lancaster, NH

This should be printed on weatherproof posters and appended to the "turn back now" signs on the trails. It's an excellent description, and thanks for sharing your experience.

Balsams Update - Go Big or Go home

TIF is a government subsidy for businesses that can't get private financing on terms that are economically viable. There's usually a pretty strong reason. I'm not opposed to infrastructure improvements and the like that generally benefit a community or state or nation. But a thumb on the...

Balsams Update - Go Big or Go home

Sigh. "State and local governments across the United States use several types of property tax incentives for business, including property tax abatement programs, firm-specific property tax incentives, tax increment financing, enterprise zones, and industrial development bonds com- bined with...

Forgot how bad Polartec Fleece is

OMG you're old. ;) I bet you even had a 60/40 parka at some point. Wait, I guess you did: Any companies still make windshells with the 'old' 60-40 cloth ?

    missing hiker - Lancaster, NH

Not from what the Concord Monitor reports. According to Lt. Wayne Saunders of the Fish and Game Department: "She had no intention of staying overnight. What she had was sufficient for a day hike in decent weather[.]”

    missing hiker - Lancaster, NH

People familiar with accident investigation know that a series of errors are often jointly responsible for the outcome. In this instance, choosing the planned route in the face of the forecasted weather, doing it solo in those circumstances and going "fast and light" have to be near the top of...

A recipe for a downright nasty weekend

With the frequent large dumps and my boredom at doing anything twice in a row, I've been unable to keep any of my half dozen local ski routes broken out. Not much good for technique, but my quads are starting to show some definition ...

    Advice on Backcountry Skis

FWIW, the Arctis Expe was a popular choice for this among SAR types I knew in Alaska. You will probably find (if you haven't already) quite a few online references to the Guide (Annum)/Silvretta combination. Might not truly need the skins with those skis, but that depends greatly on your routes.

Whats your go to winter hiking setup?

This point needs a whole lot more prominence and emphasis. Being out in the open in winter is quite different from being in the trees. Zippers, cords, flaps, laces, etc. all need to be carefully examined for their usefulness and reliability in extremely cold temperatures when you cannot risk...

    Advice on Backcountry Skis
